Gilbertville is a city in Black Hawk County, Iowa, United States. The population was 794 at the time of the 2020 census.[1] It is part of the Waterloo–Cedar Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Gilbertville was platted in 1856.[2]

On August 26, 1965, an F4 (max. wind speeds 207-260 mph) tornado 8.1 miles away from the city center killed one person and injured 17 people and caused between $500,000 and $5,000,000 in damages.

2020 census
As of the census of 2020,[6] there were 794 people, 338 households, and 225 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,220.8 inhabitants per square mile (857.4/km2). There were 353 housing units at an average density of 987.3 per square mile (381.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.2% White, 1.1% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.0% Pacific Islander, 0.5% from other races and 2.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino persons of any race comprised 1.8% of the population.
Of the 338 households, 27.8% of which had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.7% were married couples living together, 6.5% were cohabitating couples, 23.1% had a female householder with no spouse or partner present and 15.7% had a male householder with no spouse or partner present. 33.4% of all households were non-families. 27.8% of all households were made up of individuals, 13.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older.
The median age in the city was 44.6 years. 21.9% of the residents were under the age of 20; 4.5% were between the ages of 20 and 24; 24.2% were from 25 and 44; 26.8% were from 45 and 64; and 22.5% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 48.9% male and 51.1% female.

The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.87.

The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.1% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 19.6% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who were 65 years of age or older.
