| Purpose of use |
To demonstrate the style of the Grand Duchess's paintings and their technical prowess: features which cannot be demonstrated by text alone. This particular image was painted during her exile in Denmark. A Russian Church, perhaps representing her homeland or faith, lies partially obscured and distant behind trees and a fence painted in sombre colors. The bold blue of the onion domes brings the church forward in the picture into the gaze of the viewer. At the same time the warmth of the autumnal colors in the foreground hints at the warmth of her feelings for her lost homeland and for her steady faith. |
