Summary

A photograph of what remains of the old cyclotron, located in the basement of Pupin Hall. This was known as "Fermi's cyclotron" and was used by Fermi and other scientists. The dees have been removed and are now at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. The permanent magnet of the cyclotron still remains. It would be difficult to remove as it is embedded in the concrete of the building and is still slightly radioactive. The basement of Pupin Labs remains locked off, but various trespassers have left their marks on the cyclotron.

This photograph was taken during a rare tour organized by Columbia University's Society of Physics Students (SPS).
