Coulterville (formerly Maxwell's Creek)[1] is a census-designated place in Mariposa County, California, United States.[2] It is located on Maxwell Creek Script error: No such module "convert". northwest of Mariposa,[1] at an elevation of Script error: No such module "convert"..[2] Coulterville had a population of 115 at the 2020 census,[3] down from 201 at the 2010 census, when the CDP covered a much greater area. It is a mining town located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. The ZIP Code is 95311. The community is in area code 209.
History
The place was settled in 1850 by George W. Coulter, for whom it is also named.[1][4] For a time Coulter lived in a tent flying the American flag, prompting local Mexicans to call the place Banderita (Spanish for "small flag").[5] The Maxwell's Creek post office opened in 1852 and changed its name to Coulterville in 1853.[5] The name "Maxwell" honors George Maxwell, with whom Coulter cast lots to determine the name of the town.[1]
Coulterville is registered as California Historical Landmark #332.[5] A large portion of the downtown was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Coulterville Main Street Historic District.
The 1867 Brevet General James F. Rusling inspection report notes that most of the Stockton to Coulterville area was "in almost continuous wheat-fields" May 24–26, 1866.[6]

The 2020 United States census reported that Coulterville had a population of 115. The population density was Script error: No such module "convert".. The racial makeup of Coulterville was 92 (80.0%) White, 0 (0.0%) African American, 1 (0.9%) Native American, 1 (0.9%) Asian, 0 (0.0%) Pacific Islander, 11 (9.6%) from other races, and 10 (8.7%) from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 13 persons (11.3%).[24]
The whole population lived in households. There were 54 households, out of which 18 (33.3%) had children under the age of 18 living in them, 27 (50.0%) were married-couple households, 3 (5.6%) were cohabiting couple households, 16 (29.6%) had a female householder with no partner present, and 8 (14.8%) had a male householder with no partner present. 13 households (24.1%) were one person, and 7 (13.0%) were one person aged 65 or older. The average household size was 2.13.[24] There were 36 families (66.7% of all households).[25]
The age distribution was 18 people (15.7%) under the age of 18, 8 people (7.0%) aged 18 to 24, 20 people (17.4%) aged 25 to 44, 44 people (38.3%) aged 45 to 64, and 25 people (21.7%) who were 65Script error: No such module "String".years of age or older. There were 69 housing units at an average density of Script error: No such module "convert"., of which 54 (78.3%) were occupied. Of these, 29 (53.7%) were owner-occupied, and 25 (46.3%) were occupied by renters.[24]
