The nearby Pine River (also known as the Los Pinos River) contains large fragments of puddingstones derived from a local geologic formation named the Vallecito Conglomerate. The Precambrian-aged Vallecito Conglomerate is exposed in the southwestern part of the San Juan Mountains and the Weminuche Wilderness of the San Juan National Forest.
