Present day 12601 MGR Chennai Central Mail started running in the beginning of 20th century as Malabar Express. Later in the 1940s its name was changed to Mangalore Mail. The present day Malabar Express was introduced later in 1963 between Mangalore and Cochin Harbour Terminus (Ernakulam) in 1963. Its a separate train.
