When the word is used in relation between men, it means slave, but between man and deity, it means worshiper. So if you say, Abd Almutalib (Almutalib is the name of a man, you're refering to his slave), but Abd Manaf or Abd Shams as well as Abd Allah (Abdullah), these mean worshiper of Manaf, Shams (the Sun God), and The One God (Allah).
