&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;William Dixon Cocker&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039; (13 October 1882  &amp;amp;ndash; 1970) was a Scottish poet who wrote in both [[Scots language|Scots]] and English.&lt;br /&gt;

==Life==&lt;br /&gt;
W. D. Cocker was born in [[Rutherglen]] to a family of [[Glasgow]] merchants,&amp;lt;ref name=Edinburgh&amp;gt;Maurice Lindsay and Lesley Duncan, &amp;#039;&amp;#039;The Edinburgh book of twentieth-century Scottish poetry&amp;#039;&amp;#039;, p.378&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt; although his family had connections to the rural [[Drymen]] area where he learned Scots.&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;[https://electricscotland.com/history/other/cocker_wd.htm Significant Scots | William Dixon Cocker], Electric Scotland&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
In the [[First World War]], he served with the [[Highland Light Infantry]], and was taken prisoner in 1917. His war poetry is limited in scope, but includes the poems &amp;quot;Up the Line to Poelkapelle&amp;quot;, &amp;quot;[[The Sniper (poem)|The Sniper]]&amp;quot; and a five-part sonnet cycle entitled &amp;quot;Sonnets in Captivity&amp;quot;.&lt;br /&gt;

After the war Cocker entered the accounts department of the &amp;#039;&amp;#039;[[Daily Record (Scotland)|Daily Record]]&amp;#039;&amp;#039;, and was the paper&amp;#039;s drama critic until his retirement in 1956.&amp;lt;ref name=Edinburgh/&amp;gt; He is best known for his humorous poems in Scots, often on Biblical themes, such as &amp;quot;The Deluge&amp;quot;, on the story of Noah and the Flood.
