Mercer was born in [[Athens, Ohio]], and grew up in [[Toronto]], [[Ontario]], Canada. She founded &amp;#039;&amp;#039;[[Opera Canada]]&amp;#039;&amp;#039;, a periodical for which she served as editor from 1960 to 1990. She also founded the [[Canadian Children&amp;#039;s Opera Chorus]], and served as its first president. She was host of [[CBC Radio]]&amp;#039;s weekly show &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Opera Time&amp;#039;&amp;#039; from 1962 to 1979, as well as its successor &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Opera in Stereo&amp;#039;&amp;#039; from 1979 to 1984.&lt;br /&gt;
