Rimal is built on the ancient port city of Gaza called ''[[Maiuma (city)| Maioumas]]''.<ref>Butt, 1995, p.9.</ref> The intense rivalry between Christian Gaza and [[Dagon#Marnas|Pagan]] Maioumas continued throughout the [[Byzantine]] era, even after the population of Maioumas had been converted to Christianity by Imperial decree and the Pagan sanctuaries destroyed by [[Porphyry of Gaza]].<ref>Hevelone-Harper, 1997, pp.11-12.</ref><ref>Sivan, 2008, p.337.</ref><ref>Sterk, 2004, p.207.</ref><ref>Butt, 1995, p.70</ref> The coastline of Gaza consisted mostly of sand dunes around the bustling [[Port of Gaza, Rimal|Port of Gaza]] up until the mid-20th century.<ref name="BPoG">Rimal is the lone elite district of the city.
