&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;Rick Brookes&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039; (born 16 June 1948) is a British satirical cartoonist. Having studied art at Salford Art School, Manchester, he worked first as an assistant art editor for [[Mirabelle]] magazine and then as a graphic artist and designer for IPC magazines such as &amp;#039;&amp;#039;[[Woman&amp;#039;s Own]]&amp;#039;&amp;#039;, &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Woman&amp;#039;s Realm&amp;#039;&amp;#039; and &amp;#039;&amp;#039;[[Ideal Home]]&amp;#039;&amp;#039;.&lt;br /&gt;

Brookes was an [[illustrator]] and staff [[cartoonist]] at the [[Evening Standard]] from 1977, signing his strips first &amp;quot;Rick Brookes&amp;quot; then &amp;quot;Brookes&amp;quot;. He worked alongside [[Raymond Jackson (&amp;quot;JAK&amp;quot;)|Jak]] for eighteen years, deputising for him  In 1994 Brookes began contributing to the [[Daily Express]] taking over from Giles, using the signature &amp;quot;Brook&amp;quot;, and he kept the same signature after he moved to &amp;#039;&amp;#039;[[The Sun (United Kingdom)|The Sun]]&amp;#039;&amp;#039; in 1996, taking over from [[Tom Johnston (cartoonist)|Tom Johnston]].&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;&amp;quot;Tributes&amp;quot;, &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Evening Standard&amp;#039;&amp;#039;, July 28, 1997, p.9.&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;

Brookes&amp;#039;s cartoons appear regularly in newspapers such as [[News of the World]], [[Mail on Sunday]], [[The American (weekly)|The American]] and [[Punch (magazine)|Punch]], and is especially popular on [[Metro (Associated Metro Limited)|Metro]], with his series &amp;#039;&amp;#039;THIS LIFE&amp;#039;&amp;#039;.&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;This series of strips was collected in 2003 in his book &amp;#039;&amp;#039;This Life&amp;#039;&amp;#039;, published by [http://www.metro.co.uk/ Metro].&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt; He also worked on the [[Allied Lyons]] advertising campaign for [[Saatchi &amp;amp; Saatchi]]. Greatly influenced by [[Carl Giles|Giles]], [[David Low (cartoonist)|Low]] and [[Raymond Jackson (&amp;quot;JAK&amp;quot;)|Jak]], Brookes also admires [[Pat Oliphant|Oliphant]], [[Matt Pritchett|Matt]] and [[Stanley McMurtry|Mac]]. He is reported as drawing his sketches with a Swan fountain pen and flexible nib, just so that he can be suppler in his drawing.
