== Background ==&lt;br /&gt;
The name &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Punacha&amp;#039;&amp;#039; is derived from the [[Tulu language|Tulu]] language word &amp;#039;&amp;#039;puncha&amp;#039;&amp;#039;, which is a natural mud habitat (an [[Ant colony|anthill]]) where snakes usually live.&lt;br /&gt;

Punacha is famous for the [[Shri]] Mahishaamardhini temple which is at the heart of the village. Legend has it that, long ago, a tribeswoman accidentally discovered a black [[Mahishaamardhini]] (an avatar of [[Durga]]) sculpture while she was working in a nearby hill called &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Devaragudde&amp;#039;&amp;#039;, &amp;#039;The Hill of God&amp;#039;. One of the eyes of the sculpture got damaged by her knife without her knowledge. Later, the sculpture was taken to the current site and a temple was built, dedicated to the Goddess.&lt;br /&gt;

Before independence, &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Punacha&amp;#039;&amp;#039; (which is part of [[Dakshina Kannada]] or Canara district) was ruled by the [[Madras Presidency]]. After independence this place was included in [[Mysore state]] which was later renamed as &amp;#039;&amp;#039;[[Karnataka]]&amp;#039;&amp;#039;.&lt;br /&gt;
