Syjuco graduated from high school in 1993 from the [[Cebu International School]]. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in [[English studies|English Literature]] from the [[Ateneo de Manila University]] in 2000 and completed his [[Master of Fine Arts|MFA]] from [[Columbia University]] in 2004. &lt;br /&gt;
In early 2011 he completed a PhD in [[English studies|literature]] from the [[University of Adelaide]].&lt;br /&gt;

Even before it was published, Syjuco&amp;#039;s debut novel &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Ilustrado&amp;#039;&amp;#039; won the Grand Prize for a Novel in English at the [[2008 Palanca Awards]], the Philippines&amp;#039; highest literary honor.
