The Main Core data comes from the [[National Security Agency|NSA]], [[Federal Bureau of Investigation|FBI]], [[Central Intelligence Agency|CIA]], and other agencies,<ref name="Salon" /> and is collected and stored without warrants or [[court order]]s.<ref name="Salon" /> The database's name derives from the fact that it contains copies of the essence of each item ({{em|i.e.}}{{nbs}}it contains the {{em|main core}} of each item) of intelligence information on Americans having been produced by the FBI and other agencies of the U.S. intelligence community.<ref name="Salon" />
