José María Verdugo (Carrillo) was born about 1751 in [[Loreto, Baja California Sur|Presidio de Loreto, Baja California]], [[New Spain]] to Juan Diego Verdugo and María Ygnacia de la Concepción Carrillo.&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Patron ordinance submission sheets, 1969-1991&amp;#039;&amp;#039;, Salt Lake City, Utah&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt;&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;Marie Northrop &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Spanish-Mexican Families of Early California, 1769-1850&amp;#039;&amp;#039;, Vol. II, pp. 318-19&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt; José María Verdugo came to California with his brother, [[Mariano Verdugo]], in the 1769 [[Fernando Rivera y Moncada|Rivera expedition]]. In 1784, Verdugo requested and received a grant from his army commander Governor [[Pedro Fages]] to settle and graze his cattle on what became [[Rancho San Rafael]], also known as La Zanja.&amp;lt;ref name=&amp;quot;Hubert Howe Bancroft 1800, pp.661-662&amp;quot;&amp;gt;Hubert Howe Bancroft, &amp;#039;&amp;#039;History of California&amp;#039;&amp;#039;, Vol. I, 1542-1800, pp.661-662&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt;  Corporal Verdugo&amp;#039;s grant consisted of eight square leagues ({{convert|36402|acre|km2}}) of land stretching roughly from the [[Arroyo Seco (Los Angeles County)|Arroyo Seco]] in present-day [[Pasadena, California|Pasadena]] to the [[Mission San Fernando]].
