Alexander Harkin opened the store as combination general store and post office in 1867 in the growing town of West Newton.<ref name=":0">{{Cite web|url=http://sites.mnhs.org/historic-sites/harkin-store/history-0|title=Harkin Store History|website=mnhs.org|publisher=Minnesota Historical Society|access-date=Sep 23, 2016}}</ref> The town fell into decline after four years of locust swarms devastated southern Minnesota, and the railroad extended away from West Newton.
