&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;Frederick Thomas Bennett Macartney&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039; (27 September 1887 – 2 September 1980), [[poet]] and [[critic]], was born in [[Port Melbourne]], [[Australia]]. His byline was often &amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;Frederick T. Macartney&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;.&amp;lt;ref name=&amp;quot;adb&amp;quot; /&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;

==Life and writing career==&lt;br /&gt;
Macartney attended Alfred Crescent State School until he was twelve, after which he held various jobs as a shop-assistant, before working as a bookkeeper on a Riverina station in 1910–12.&amp;lt;ref name=&amp;quot;adb&amp;quot; /&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;

In 1921 Macartney went to Darwin as an assistant to the administrator of the Northern Territory, [[Frederic Charles Urquhart]], and to the government secretary. In 1929, Macartney wrote &amp;#039;&amp;#039;A Sweep of Lute-strings, Being the Title Excusing a Very Few Love-rhymes&amp;#039;&amp;#039;. In 1947, he published &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Australian Poetry&amp;#039;&amp;#039;,&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;{{cite book|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=AQI4_He9s9AC&amp;amp;q=Frederick+Macartney+poet |title=Google Bookshelf |date= November 2006|isbn=9781406734867 |accessdate=2012-07-22|last1=MacArtney |first1=Frederick T. }}&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt; a collection of twenty poems by Australian poets.&lt;br /&gt;

In 1956, he edited and updated [[E Morris Miller|E Morris Miller&amp;#039;s]] &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Australian Literature from its Beginnings to 1935&amp;#039;&amp;#039;, under the title &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Australian Literature, a Bibliography to 1938, Extended to 1950&amp;#039;&amp;#039;.&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;Australian Literature a Bibliography to 1938 Extended to 1950&amp;#039;&amp;#039; (Angus and Robertson, 1956), Preface, page v., by Miller and Macartney.&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt;  Also in 1956, he wrote the foreword to &amp;#039;&amp;#039;The Sonnet in Australasia, a Survey and Selection&amp;#039;&amp;#039;.&lt;br /&gt;

In 1957 he wrote &amp;#039;&amp;#039;A Historical Outline of Australian Literature&amp;#039;&amp;#039;. In 1961, &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Selected Poems of Frederick T. Macartney&amp;#039;&amp;#039; was published by the Commonwealth Literary Fund. In 1967, Macartney wrote and provided the illustrations for &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Proof Against Failure&amp;#039;&amp;#039;. In 1973, he wrote &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Australian Literary Essays&amp;#039;&amp;#039;.&lt;br /&gt;
