&amp;#039;Dovenby&amp;#039; is &amp;#039;Dufan&amp;#039;s bȳ&amp;#039; or &amp;#039;Dufan&amp;#039;s hamlet or village&amp;#039;. &amp;#039;Bȳ&amp;#039; is late [[Old English]], from [[Old Norse]] &amp;#039;býr&amp;#039;. The personal name &amp;#039;Dufan&amp;#039; &amp;quot;is of Irish origin (OIr &amp;#039;Dubhán&amp;#039;), a diminutive of &amp;#039;dubh&amp;#039;, &amp;#039;black&amp;#039;, but it is on record from [[Iceland]].&amp;quot;&amp;lt;ref&amp;gt;{{Cite book|last=Armstrong|first=A. The oldest part of the estate is a 13th century [[peel tower]].
