He was born on 18 September 1876 and educated at [[Merchant Taylors' School, Northwood|Merchant Taylors']] and [[Lincoln College, Oxford]].<ref name="Auto9G-2"/> [[Ordained]] in 1897<ref name="Auto9G-3"/> he was initially a [[curate]] at [[All Saints, Margaret Street]] in London and then a [[missionary|missionary priest]] in [[South Africa]].{{citation needed|date=September 2014}}

After time as [[vicar]] of St Barnabas', [[Dover]],<ref>{{cite book | last=[[Richard Malden|Malden Richard (ed)]] | author-link= | title= Crockford's Clerical Directory for 1920 (51st edn) | location= London | publisher= The Field Press| pages=1013| year=1920 | isbn=}}</ref> he began a long period of service overseas: first as [[Dean (religion)|dean]] of the [[Christ Church Cathedral (Falkland Islands)|Falkland Islands]]; then a similar post in [[Anglican Diocese of Newcastle, Australia|Newcastle, New South Wales]] following which he was ordained to the [[episcopate]] as [[Anglican Diocese of Kalgoorlie|Bishop of Kalgoorlie]].

[[Translation (ecclesiastical)|Translated]] to [[Bishop of Mauritius|Mauritius]] in 1919, he returned to England eleven years later to become an [[Assistant Bishop of Guildford]]<ref name="Auto9G-5"/> and [[Archdeacon of Dorking]], then [[Archdeacon of Surrey|of Surrey]], until his final resignation in 1949, before his death on 9 April 1955.<ref name="Auto9G-6"/>
