After the [[opening of China]] following the [[State visit of Deng Xiaoping to the United States]], the two countries agreed on educational exchange. Pomfret was among the first students to go to China, studying there from 1980 to 1983. He returned to China after several years for the [[Associated Press]], for which he covered the [[Tiananmen Massacre]] of 1989. He wrote the book after becoming Beijing Bureau Chief for the ''[[Washington Post]]'' from 1998 to 2003.{{sfnb|Frank|2006}}
