The paper was established January 6, 1897 as a weekly publication in [[Vale, Oregon]] called the &amp;#039;&amp;#039;District Silver Advocate.&amp;#039;&amp;#039; The first proprietor was Bert Venable and editor John E. Roberts. The paper&amp;#039;s name was in reference to the [[Free Silver Movement]], which the publication supported along with politician [[William Jennings Bryan]].&amp;lt;ref name=&amp;quot;turnbull39&amp;quot; /&amp;gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Roberts moved the paper from Vale to Ontario, changed its name to the &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Advocate&amp;#039;&amp;#039; and it became an organ of the [[Democratic Party of Oregon|Democratic Party]]. Don Carlos Boyd purchased the paper on November 28, 1900, changed its allegiance to [[Oregon Republican Party|Republican]] and assumed the name &amp;#039;&amp;#039;Argus&amp;#039;&amp;#039;. In January 1947, Ralph Curtis sold &amp;#039;&amp;#039;The Ontario Argus&amp;#039;&amp;#039; to Bernard Mainwaring and Don Lynch.&amp;lt;ref name=&amp;quot;:3&amp;quot;&amp;gt;{{Cite news |date=February 4, 1953 |title=Mainwaring Sells Interest in Newspaper |work=The Idaho Statesman |pages=9}}&amp;lt;/ref&amp;gt; At the time the two men owned &amp;#039;&amp;#039;[[The Idaho Press]]&amp;#039;&amp;#039;. Also, delivery will transition from carrier to postal and the paper&amp;#039;s Ontario printing operation will shutter.
