{{Wikipedia:WikiProject Java/Header}}
The assessment team focuses on assessing the quality of Wikipedia's Java articles. While much of the work is done in conjunction with the [[Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team|WP:1.0]] program, the article ratings are also used within the project itself to aid in recognizing excellent contributions and identifying topics in need of further work.
The ratings are done in a distributed fashion through parameters in the {{tl|WikiProject Java}} project banner; this causes the articles to be placed in a set of categories that serves as the basis for an automatically generated worklist.

'''Note: although some overlapping of projects is unavoidable for some topics, please be prudent with this category: [[:Category:Articles with example Java code]]; although it IS included in the categorytree of Java, the content of some articles in it can be marginally Java-related and therefore NOT automatically part of this project.'''

There is a Quality assessment managed by this project, in addition to the Importance assessment.
Quality Assessment, when done through this project, is managed with the Computing parent project classes.

== How to rate articles ==
Any member of WikiProject Java is invited to rate articles for the project. Here is a typical way of assessing an article (in its talk page please):

 <nowiki>{{talkheader}}
{{wpbs||1=
  {{WikiProject Computing|class=C|importance=Low|auto=yes|java=yes}}
  {{WikiProject Java|class=C|importance=Mid}}
}}
{{to_do}}</nowiki>

''Note: a Computing banner may or may not be present.''

See [[Template:WikiProject_Java/doc]] for instructions on the various parameters.

This syntax is not a done deal yet. Please see [[Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Java/Things you can do/to do]] for an ongoing discussion of this issue.

== Frequently asked questions ==
; What are the purposes of article assessments? : The assessment system allows a WikiProject to monitor the quality of articles in its subject areas, and to prioritize work on these articles. The ratings are also used by the [[Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team|Wikipedia 1.0 program]] to prepare for static releases of Wikipedia content.
; Are these ratings official? : Not really; these ratings are meant primarily for the internal use of the project, and usually do not imply any official standing within Wikipedia as a whole.
; How can I get an article rated? : Please list it in the [[#Requesting an assessment|section for assessment requests]] above.
; Who can assess articles? : In general, anyone can add{{mdash}} or change{{mdash}} an article's rating. However, the "GA" and "FA" labels should only be used on articles that have been reviewed and are currently designated as [[Wikipedia:Good articles|good articles]] or [[Wikipedia:Featured articles|featured article]]s, respectively. Individual WikiProjects may also have more formal procedures for rating an article, and please note that the WikiProject bears ultimate responsibility for resolving disputes.
; How do I assess an article? : Consult the [[#Quality scale|quality scale]] above; once you have chosen the level that seems to be closest to the article, set the ''class'' parameter in the WikiProject banner template to the level's name (omitting "Class" from the end). For example, to rate an article as "B-Class", use <code>|class=B</code> in the banner. Again, the "FA" and "GA" labels should not be added to articles unless they are currently designated as such.
; Someone put a project banner template on an article, but it's not really within the WikiProject's scope. What should I do? : Because of the large number of articles we deal with, we occasionally make mistakes and add tags to articles that shouldn't have them. If you notice one, feel free to remove the tag, and optionally leave a note on the article's talk page (or directly with the person who tagged the article).
; What if I don't agree with a rating? : Feel free to change it{{mdash}} within reason{{mdash}} if you think a different rating is justified; in the case of major disputes, the WikiProject as a whole can discuss the issue and come to a consensus as to the best rating. You can also list it in the [[#Requesting an assessment|section for assessment requests]] below, and someone will take a look at it. Alternately, you can ask any member of the project to rate the article again.
; Aren't the ratings subjective? : Yes, they are somewhat subjective, but it's the best system we've been able to devise. If you have a better idea, please don't hesitate to let us know!
; Why didn't the reviewer leave any comments? : Unfortunately, due to the volume of articles that need to be assessed, we are unable to leave detailed comments in most cases. If you have particular questions, you might ask the person who assessed the article; they will usually be happy to provide you with their reasoning.
; Where can I get my article reviewed? : If you desire a review, you may wish to list the article for the [[Wikipedia:WikiProject_Java/Peer_Review|peer review]] process.

If you have any other questions not listed here, please feel free to ask them on the [[Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Java|discussion page]] for this project.
