Chanov played his only game for [[USSR national football team|USSR]] on 28 March 1984 in a friendly against [[Germany national football team|West Germany]], and he was the team [[Captain (association football)|captain]] in that game. He was included in Soviet [[1982 FIFA World Cup]] squad, but did not play in any games.
