==Big Bang==

I note that both of the quotes that you included come from 1992. This time period was very interesting from a historical standpoint in that it was a time when there was a lot of hemming and hawing over the philosophical implications of the Big Bang. In particular, there was some concern that empirical data in 1992 was contradicting parts of the Big Bang. Resolutions to these quandries would be forthcoming, but in the meantime, a lot of other ideas were imposed onto the science.

Burbidge is a Big Bang critic and using him as a source is to give undue weight to the opinions of a Big Bang critic when the paradigm is dominant to the point of ascendancy in science. Likewise, the opinions of the historian of science are ill-considered in light of current understandings of such topics as [[eternal inflation]]. Basically the quotes are out-of-date.

There is more I can say about these issues, but as it is the Big Bang article already includes more than its fair share of reporting on religious/philosophical speculation. As such, I thought it best to keep the growing bloat of this content down to a minimum.

I am happy to discuss these issues in greater detail if you want. I know that these explanations are very cursory, but if you would like I will go into much more detail.

:The problem is that these proposed additions are not strictly relevant to the topic itself. Burbidge is a Big Bang denier, and as such, his opinion is skewed by that perspective. It is actually an incomplete opinion because the Big Bang does not require an initial cause. Likewise, the quote from the historian of science does not conform to present understandings of the implications of the Big Bang paradigm. There are a few things going on right now in [[WP:WPMD|WikiProject Maryland]] that I thought all members should know about, especially the first one.
*Not too long ago, [[User:Marylandstater|Marylandstater]] raised the question of exactly how many members of the project are still active.  For this reason, I'm asking everyone who is still active, and wants to remain in the project, to put an asterisk (*) after their username on the project's [[WP:WPMD#Participants|participants list]].  You have until the end of [[November 17]], [[2007]] to do so, sometime after that, all the names that do not have an asterisk will be removed.  This is just to clean up the ever expanding list.  If you've been gone and come back to find that you've been removed from the list, don't take it personally, just re-add yourself!  I won't feel bad at all if no one gets removed, in fact, it would be nice if all 30 members still consider themselves active.  Also, this won't affect the two subprojects, but speaking of the subprojects...
*As of sometime next week [[Wikipedia:WikiProject Baltimore City College|WikiProject Baltimore City College]] will be no more.  Myself, [[User:Golem88991|Golem88991]], and [[User:warlordjohncarter|John Carter]] have decided to make it into a task force of WikiProject Maryland. And thanks for this dialogue, I have found some quite interesting reading on the topic that I would never have otherwise come across without your additions.  As an aside, I found a reference to a letter of Origen's which explicitely rejects the salvation of the devil, making his doctrine of apokatastasis not quite what one could call fully universal salvation, or, at least, to quote the noted Origen scholar H Crouzel: "The Origenian doctrine of ''apokatastasis'' is neither as simple nor as firm as that to which it was reduced by later Origenists and the controversies surrounding them." == Volunteer opportunity in Bethesda, Thursday, July 16 ==


The Wikimedia Foundation will be conducting an all-day Academy at the National Institutes of Health, in Bethesda, Maryland, on Thursday, July 16.  The team that will be teaching at the Academy, a mix of paid staff and volunteers, is looking for four more volunteers to be teaching assistants, providing one-to-one assistance in workshops whenever a workshop participant has a problem following the instructional directions.  (We currently have two editors signed up as teaching assistants, and are looking for a total of six.)

The NIH editing workshops are only for two hours, but volunteers are asked to meet the Wikimedia Foundation team at the hotel in Bethesda at about 7:15 a.m. (time to be finalized shortly) and to stay for the entire day, which ends at 4:30 p.m.  Lunch will be provided.  (The full schedule can be found [[User:John Broughton/NIH schedule|here]].)

The team is not necessarily looking for expert editors (though they are welcome), just people who can help novices who might get stuck when trying to do some basic things.  If you've been an editor for at least 3 months, and have done at least 500 edits, you probably qualify.

I am pleased to say that April will be a ''very'' exciting month for Wikipedia in Washington, DC. We have a lot of different events coming up, so you will have a lot to choose from.

First, a reminder that our second annual '''[[Wikipedia:Meetup/DC/Women in the Arts 2014|Women in the Arts Edit-a-Thon]]''' will take place on Sunday, March 30 at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

Coming up in April, we have our first-ever '''[https://www.eventbrite.com/e/open-government-wikihack-tickets-10862424805 Open Government WikiHack]''' with the Sunlight Foundation on April 5–6! We are working together to use open government data to improve the Wikimedia projects, and we would love your help. All are welcome, regardless of coding or editing experience. We will also be having a '''[[Wikipedia:Meetup/DC/Sunlight Foundation Happy Hour|happy hour]]''' the day before, with refreshments courtesy of the Sunlight Foundation.

On Friday, April 11 we are having our first edit-a-thon ever with the Library of Congress. The '''[[Wikipedia:Meetup/DC/Africa Collection Editathon|Africa Collection Edit-a-Thon]]''' will focus on the Library's African and Middle East Reading Room. It'll be early in the morning, but it's especially worth it if you're interested in improving Wikipedia's coverage of African topics.

The following day, we are having our second annual '''[[Wikipedia:Meetup/DC/Wiki Loves Capitol Hill 2014|Wiki Loves Capitol Hill]]''' training. We will discuss policy issues relevant to Wikimedia and plan for our day of outreach to Congressional staffers that will take place during the following week.

The WikiSalon is a special meetup usually held during the first and third full weeks of every month, from 7 PM to 9 PM. It's an informal gathering of Wikimedia enthusiasts, who come together to discuss Wikimedia wikis and collaboratively edit. There's no set agenda, and guests are welcome to recommend articles for the group to edit or edit on their own.

If you're coming by Metro, the closest station is Dupont Circle (on the Red Line). If you're driving, a lot of parking opens up downtown after 6:30 PM, so finding a parking space (even a free one) should be easy. Once you've found the building, go to Cove on the second floor. We will be in the conference room.

* On Saturday, February 13 and Sunday, February 14, we're working with the <span class="plainlinks">[http://wikiedu.org Wiki Education Foundation]</span> to hold a series of four edit-a-thons at the '''[[Wikipedia:Meetup/DC/AAAS2016|AAAS 2016 Annual Meeting]]'''.
* On Tuesday, February 16, we're holding the '''[[Wikipedia:Meetup/DC/SAAM_AU_2016|Smithsonian American Art Museum and American University WikiWorkshop]]''' with Professor Andrew Lih's class.
