==Orphaned fair use image (Image:Square-Dance-Logo.png)==
Thanks for uploading '''[[:Image:Square-Dance-Logo.png]]'''. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a [[WP:FU|claim of fair use]]. However, the image is currently [[WP:O|orphaned]], meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. [[WP:BOLD|You may add it back]] if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see [[Wikipedia:Fair use#Policy|our fair use policy]]).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "[[Special:Contributions/{{PAGENAME}}|my contributions]]" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any '''articles''' will be deleted after seven days, as described on [[wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion#Images.2FMedia|criteria for speedy deletion]]. :The logo was never really non-free, as far as I can tell, it's been replaced by an identical SVG, which wouldn't change the non-free situation in any case. But SVG is better than PNG, so go ahead, delete away. [[User:Cananian|C. Scott Ananian]] 18:07, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

As you may have already heard, the Wikipedia community lost an invaluable member of the community last month. Adrianne Wadewitz was a feminist scholar of 18th-Century British literature, and a prolific editor of the site. As part of a [[Wikipedia:Wadewitz Tribute Edit-a-thons|worldwide series of tributes]], New England Wikimedians, in conjunction with local institutions of higher learning, have created three edit-a-thons that will be occurring in May and June. The events are as follows:

*[[Wikipedia:Meetup/Boston/Wadewitz Memorial 2014|May 21st at Northeastern University's Snell Library]], in the Digital Scholarship Commons on the second floor
*[[Wikipedia:Meetup/Providence/Brown Wadewitz Memorial 2014|May 22nd at Brown University's Rockefeller Library]], in the Digital Scholarship Lab
*[[Wikipedia:Meetup/Boston/How to Run an Edit-a-thon/Adrianne Wadewitz Memorial Edit-a-thon|June 25th at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (exact location TBA)]], where we will also be hosting a "how to conduct an edit-a-thon" session beforehand

We hope that you will be able to join us, whether you are an experienced editor or are using Wikipedia for the first time.

Dear [[User:Cscott]],

People suggested that I consult with fellow Wikipedians to get feedback and help to improve my idea about "As an unparalleled way to raise awareness of the Wikimedia projects, I propose to create a tremendous media opportunity presented by launching Wikipedia via space travel."

I plan to use the WikiOffline and OpenZIM content library as the basis of the content launched into outer space.

Please see the idea at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IEG/Wikipedia_likes_Galactic_Exploration_for_Posterity_2015. Please post your suggestions on the talk page and please feel free to edit the idea and join the project.

== Snowball Earth ==

Something's wrong with the coding of the first paragraph of this entry. The words "The Snowball Earth," which precede "hypothesis . . . ," don't show up on the page, though they're there when I go to edit the section. I don't know enough about coding to attempt a fix. I'm leery of screwing up the chart that preceds the missing text, and that would create a mess!

I'm writing to you about this as you did the last edit of the page and you seem to have the skills to correct the problem. (I'm an English PhD with html coding skills; I mostly edit grammar, punctuation, style, and argumentation.) If not, would you pass on my message to someone who can?

Thanks! KC 19:08, 12 January 2016 (UTC)

== JavaScript for Scribunto ==

Hi,

I saw from https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T61101#1935778 that you may have patches to support JavaScript instead of Lua in Mediawiki Scribunto-powered templates? Is that true? This would really be awesome... Anything holding it back? [[User:Brettz9|Brettz9]] ([[User talk:Brettz9|talk]]) 16:35, 11 March 2016 (UTC)
: The main problem is that Scribunto doesn't (currently) have a good way of tagging the *language* that a given script is in. So you can have an all-JavaScript Scribunto, or an all-Lua Scribunto, but not a Scribunto install which supports *both*. That limited the applicability of my work, so I got a bit distracted trying to solve that particular problem. I think there's more core support for tagging the content type of a given title now, that might offer a way forward. [[User:Cscott|C. Scott Ananian]] ([[User talk:Cscott#top|talk]]) 17:40, 11 March 2016 (UTC)
:: Thanks for the prompt reply. I see. Maybe the limitation is a bit of a blessing though, as it would force child templates to also be rewritten in JavaScript, the virtual [[universal auxiliary language]] of the Web. [[User:Brettz9|Brettz9]] ([[User talk:Brettz9|talk]]) 18:32, 12 March 2016 (UTC)

== Server costs ==

Recently on Jimbo's Talk page, you said that a particular server was costing $10,000 per day to maintain. Is that really correct, or did you mistype? - [[Special:Contributions/72.78.244.41|72.78.244.41]] ([[User talk:72.78.244.41|talk]]) 02:03, 7 August 2016 (UTC)
:I looked it up, and you're right, my number was a little high. Erik M said it was costing "$30K/month", so that's $1,000/day. I'll update my post. [[User:Cscott|C. Scott Ananian]] ([[User talk:Cscott#top|talk]]) 14:25, 7 August 2016 (UTC)
::And to be clear, that was the cost for the datacenter, that server was the last one remaining in that datacenter, and we did manage to arrange the timing such that we got the service transitioned before actually having to pay that price. ===Wikidata as Hub===
One way of looking at Wikidata relates it to the [[semantic web]] concept, around for about as long as Wikipedia, and realised in dozens of distributed Web institutions. It sees Wikidata as supplying central, encyclopedic coverage of [[linked structured data]], and looks ahead to greater support for "federated queries" that draw together information from all parts of the emerging network of websites.
[[File:Mandel zoom 07 satellite.jpg|left|250px]]
Another perspective might be likened to a photographic negative of that one: Wikidata as an already-functioning Web hub. Over half of its properties are identifiers on other websites. These are Wikidata's "external links", to use Wikipedia terminology: one type for the DOI of a publication, another for the VIAF page of an author, with thousands more such. Wikidata links out to sites that are not nominally part of the semantic web, effectively drawing them into a larger system. The crosswalk possibilities of the systematic construction of these links was covered in Issue 8.

[[Wikipedia:External links]] speaks of them as kept "minimal, meritable, and directly relevant to the article." Here Wikidata finds more of a function. On viaf.org one can type a VIAF author identifier into the search box, and find the author page. The [https://tools.wmflabs.org/wikidata-todo/resolver.php Wikidata Resolver tool], these days including Open Street Map, Scholia etc., allows this kind of lookup. The [https://tools.wmflabs.org/hub/ hub tool] by {{noping|maxlath}} takes a major step further, allowing both lookup and crosswalk to be encoded in a single URL.

'''Did you know?'''<div class="thumbcaption" style="font-size: 90%;">
Did you know that you can now use the [[mw:Special:MyLanguage/VisualEditor/Diffs|visual diff tool]] on any page?

[[File:Wikitext diff paragraph move correcting vandalism 2018.png|alt=Screenshot showing some changes, in the two-column wikitext diff display|center|frameless|250px]]

Sometimes, it is hard to see important changes in a wikitext diff. This screenshot of a wikitext diff (click to enlarge) shows that the paragraphs have been rearranged, but it does not highlight the removal of a word or the addition of a new sentence.

If you [[Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures|enable the Beta Feature]] for "{{Int:visualeditor-preference-visualdiffpage-label}}", you will have a new option. It will give you a new box at the top of every diff page. This box will let you choose either diff system on any edit.

[[File:VisualEditor visual diff tool - toggle button.png|alt=Toggle button showing visual and wikitext options; visual option is selected|center|frameless|200px]]
Click the toggle button to switch between visual and wikitext diffs.

In the visual diff, additions, removals, new links, and formatting changes will be highlighted. Other changes, such as changing the size of an image, are described in notes on the side.

[[File:Visual diff paragraph move correcting vandalism 2018.png|alt=Screenshot showing the same changes to an article. Most changes are highlighted with text formatting.|center|frameless|250px]]

This screenshot shows the same edit as the wikitext diff. The visual diff highlights the removal of one word and the addition of a new sentence. An arrow indicates that the paragraph changed location.

You can read and help translate [[mw:Special:MyLanguage/Help:VisualEditor/User guide|the user guide]], which has more information about how to use the visual editor.
</div></div>

Since [[m:VisualEditor/Newsletter/2017/May|the last newsletter]], the [[mw:Editing|Editing Team]] has spent most of their time supporting [[mw:2017 wikitext editor|the 2017 wikitext editor mode]], which is available inside the visual editor as a Beta Feature, and improving [[mw:VisualEditor/Diffs|the visual diff tool]]. Their work board is available [[phab:project/view/3236/|in Phabricator]]. You can find links to the work finished each week at [[mw:VisualEditor/Weekly triage meetings]]. Their [[mw:Editing team/Current priorities|current priorities]] are fixing bugs, supporting the 2017 wikitext editor, and improving the visual diff tool.

===Recent changes===
*The '''[[mw:2017 wikitext editor|2017 wikitext editor]]''' is [[Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures|available as a Beta Feature]] on desktop devices. It has the same toolbar as the visual editor and can use the citoid service and other modern tools. The team have been comparing the performance of different editing environments. They have studied how long it takes to open the page and start typing. The study uses data for more than one million edits during December and January. Some changes have been made to improve the speed of the 2017 wikitext editor and the visual editor. Recently, the 2017 wikitext editor opened fastest for most edits, and the 2010 WikiEditor was fastest for some edits. More information will be posted at [[mw:Contributors/Projects/Editing performance]].
*The '''[[mw:VisualEditor/Diffs|visual diff tool]]''' was developed for the visual editor. It is now available to all users of the visual editor and the 2017 wikitext editor. When you review your changes, you can toggle between wikitext and visual diffs. You can also [[Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures|enable the new Beta Feature]] for "Visual diffs". The Beta Feature lets you use the visual diff tool to view other people's edits on page histories and [[Special:RecentChanges]]. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T167508]
*[[mw:Special:MyLanguage/Extension:CodeMirror|'''Wikitext syntax highlighting''']] is available as a Beta Feature for both [[mw:2017 wikitext editor|the 2017 wikitext editor]] and the 2010 wikitext editor. [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T101246]
*The [[mw:Citoid|citoid service]] automatically translates URLs, DOIs, ISBNs, and PubMed id numbers into wikitext citation templates. This tool has been used at the English Wikipedia for a long time. It is very popular and useful to editors, although it can be tricky for admins to set up. <mark>Other wikis can have this service, too. Please [[mw:Special:MyLanguage/Citoid/Enabling Citoid on your wiki|read the instructions]]. You can [[phab:T127354|ask the team to help you enable citoid at your wiki]]</mark>.

===Let's work together===
*The team is planning a presentation about editing tools for an upcoming [[m:Wikimedia Foundation metrics and activities meetings|Wikimedia Foundation metrics and activities meeting]].
*Wikibooks, Wikiversity, and other communities may have the visual editor made available by default to contributors. If your community wants this, then please contact [[mw:User talk:Deskana (WMF)|Dan Garry]].
*The <code><nowiki><references /></nowiki></code> block can [[mw:Special:MyLanguage/Contributors/Projects/Columns for references|automatically display long lists of references in columns]] on wide screens. This makes footnotes easier to read. This has already been enabled at the English Wikipedia. If you want columns for a long list of footnotes on this wiki, you can use either <code><nowiki><references /></nowiki></code> or the plain (no parameters) <code><nowiki>{{reflist}}</nowiki></code> template. If you edit a different wiki, you can [https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/maniphest/task/edit/form/1/?projects=Cite,VisualEditor,Wikimedia-Site-requests&title=Convert%20reference%20lists%20over%20to%20`responsive`%20on%20XXwiki&priority=10&parent=159895 '''request multi-column support'''] for your wiki. ===Milestone for mix'n'match===
Around the time in February when Wikidata clicked past item Q50000000, another milestone was reached: the [https://tools.wmflabs.org/mix-n-match mix'n'match] tool uploaded its 1000th dataset. Concisely defined by its author, {{noping|Magnus Manske}}, it works "to match entries in external catalogs to Wikidata". The total number of entries is now well into eight figures, and more are constantly being added: a couple of new catalogs each day is normal.

Since the [http://magnusmanske.de/wordpress/?p=114 end of 2013], mix'n'match has gradually come to play a significant part in adding statements to Wikidata. Particularly in areas with the flavour of [[digital humanities]], but datasets can of course be about practically anything. There is a catalog on skyscrapers, and two on spiders.

These days mix'n'match can be used in numerous modes, from the relaxed gamified click through a catalog looking for matches, with prompts, to the fantastically useful and often demanding search across all catalogs. I'll type that again: you can search 1000+ datasets from the simple box at the top right. The drop-down menu top left offers "creation candidates", Magnus's personal favourite. [[m:Mix'n'match/Manual]] for more.

For the Wikidatan, a key point is that these matches, however carried out, add statements to Wikidata if, and naturally only if, there is a Wikidata property associated with the catalog. For everyone, however, the hands-on experience of deciding of what is a good match is an education, in a scholarly area, biographical catalogs being particularly fraught. Underpinning recent rapid progress is an open infrastructure for scraping and uploading.

Congratulations to Magnus, our data [[Stakhanovite]]!

===The 100 Skins of the Onion===
[https://i4oc.org/news.html#April2018 Open Citations Month], with its eminently guessable hashtag, is upon us. We should be utterly grateful that in the past 12 months, so much data on which papers cite which other papers has been made open, and that Wikidata is playing its part in hosting it as "cites" statements. At the time of writing, there are 15.3M Wikidata items that can do that.

Pulling back to look at [[open access]] papers in the large, though, there is is less reason for celebration. Access in theory does not yet equate to practical access. A [http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/impactofsocialsciences/2018/03/22/releasing-1-8-million-open-access-publications-from-publisher-systems-for-text-and-data-mining/ recent LSE IMPACT blogpost] puts that issue down to "heterogeneity". A useful euphemism to save us from thinking that the whole concept doesn't fall into the realm of the [[oxymoron]].

Some home truths: aggregation is not content management, if it falls short on reusability. The PDF file format is wedded to how humans read documents, not how machines ingest them. The salami-slicer is our friend in the current downloading of open access papers, but for a better metaphor, think about skinning an onion, laboriously, 100 times with diminishing returns. There are of the order of 100 major publisher sites hosting open access papers, and the predominant offer there is still a PDF.
[[File:Red onion cross section 03.jpg|thumb|left|Red onion cross section]]
From the discoverability angle, Wikidata's bibliographic resources combined with the [[SPARQL]] query are superior in principle, by far, to existing keyword searches run over papers. Open access content should be managed into consistent HTML, something that is currently strenuous. The good news, such as it is, would be that much of it is already in [[XML]]. The organisational problem of removing further skins from the onion, with sensible prioritisation, is certainly not insuperable. The CORE group (the bloggers in the LSE posting) has some answers, but actually not all that is needed for the [[text and data mining]] purposes they highlight. The [[long tail]], or in other words the onion heart when it has become fiddly beyond patience to skin, does call for a ''[[wikt:pis aller|pis aller]]''. But the real knack is to do more between the XML and the heart.

===ScienceSource funded===
The Wikimedia Foundation announced full funding of the [[m:Grants:Project/ScienceSource|ScienceSource grant proposal]] from [http://contentmine.org/ ContentMine] on May 18. See the [https://twitter.com/TheContentMine/status/997574058727354370 ScienceSource Twitter announcement and 60 second video].

;A medical canon?
The proposal includes downloading 30,000 open access papers, aiming (roughly speaking) to create a baseline for medical referencing on Wikipedia. It leaves open the question of how these are to be chosen.

The basic criteria of [[WP:MEDRS]] include a concentration on secondary literature. Attention has to be given to the [[long tail]] of diseases that receive less current research. The MEDRS guideline supposes that [[edge case]]s will have to be handled, and the premature exclusion of publications that would be in those marginal positions would reduce the value of the collection. [[Prophylaxis]] misses the point that gate-keeping will be done by an algorithm.

Two well-known but rather different areas where such considerations apply are [[tropical disease]]s and [[alternative medicine]]. There are also a number of potential downloading troubles, and these were mentioned in [[User:Charles Matthews/Facto Post/Issue 11 – 9 April 2018|Issue 11]]. There is likely to be a gap, even with the guideline, between conditions taken to be necessary but not sufficient, and conditions sufficient but not necessary, for candidate papers to be included. With around 10,000 recognised medical conditions in standard lists, being comprehensive is demanding. With all of these aspects of the task, ScienceSource will seek community help.

;Respecting MEDRS
''Facto Post'' enters its second year, with a Cambridge Blue (OK, Aquamarine) background, a new logo, but no Cambridge blues. On-topic for the [[m:Grants:Project/ScienceSource/Profile|ScienceSource project]] is a [[Wikipedia:WikiProjectMedicine/Referencing case studies for MEDRS|project page here]]. It contains some case studies on how the [[WP:MEDRS]] guideline, for the referencing of articles at all related to human health, is applied in typical discussions.

Close to home also, a template, called {{tl|medrs}} for short, is used to express dissatisfaction with particular references. Technology can help with patrolling, and this [http://petscan.wmflabs.org/?psid=4902034 Petscan query] finds over 450 articles where there is at least one use of the template. Of course the template is merely suggesting there is a possible issue with the reliability of a reference. Deciding the truth of the allegation is another matter.

This maintenance issue is one example of where ScienceSource aims to help. Where the reference is to a scientific paper, its type of algorithm could give a pass/fail opinion on such references. It could assist patrollers of medical articles, therefore, with the templated references and more generally. There may be more to proper referencing than that, indeed: context, quite what the statement supported by the reference expresses, prominence and weight. For that kind of consideration, case studies can help. But an algorithm might help to clear the backlog.

;Plugging the gaps – Wikimania report
Officially it is "bridging the gaps in knowledge", with Wikimania 2018 in [[Cape Town]] paying tribute to the southern African concept of ''[[Ubuntu philosophy|ubuntu]]'' to implement it. Besides face-to-face interactions, Wikimedians do need their power sources.
[[File:Wikimania 2018 hackathon mentoring table plugbar.jpg|thumb|left|Hackathon mentoring table wiring]]
''Facto Post'' interviewed {{noping|Jdforrester}}, who has attended every Wikimania, and now works as Senior Product Manager for the Wikimedia Foundation. His take on tackling the gaps in the Wikimedia movement is that "if we were an army, we could march in a column and close up all the gaps". In his view though, that is a faulty metaphor, and it leads to a completely false misunderstanding of the movement, its diversity and different aspirations, and the nature of the work as "fighting" to be done in the open sector. There are many fronts, and as an [[m:Eventualism|eventualist]] he feels the gaps experienced both by editors and by users of Wikimedia content are inevitable. He would like to see a greater emphasis on reuse of content, not simply its volume.

If that may not sound like radicalism, the ''Decolonizing the Internet'' conference here organized jointly with [https://whoseknowledge.org/decolonizing-the-internet-conference/ Whose Knowledge?] can redress the picture. It comes with the claim to be "the first ever conference about centering marginalized knowledge online".

;Neglected diseases
[[File:On the Road to Eliminating Neglected Tropical Diseases in Cote d'Ivoire (29464931444).jpg|thumb|left|Anti-parasitic drugs being distributed in [[Côte d'Ivoire ]]]]
[[File:SS Whats a Neglected Disease.webm|thumb|left|''What's a Neglected Disease?'', ScienceSource video]]

To grasp the nettle, there are [[rare disease]]s, there are [[tropical disease]]s and then there are "neglected diseases". Evidently a rare enough disease is likely to be neglected, but [[neglected disease]] these days means a disease not rare, but tropical, and most often infectious or parasitic. Rare diseases as a group are dominated, in contrast, by [[genetic disease]]s.

A major aspect of neglect is found in tracking [[drug discovery]]. [[Orphan drug]]s are those developed to treat rare diseases (rare enough not to have market-driven research), but there is some overlap in practice with the [[WHO]]'s [http://www.who.int/neglected_diseases/diseases/en/ neglected diseases], where [[snakebite]], a "neglected public health issue", is on the list.

From an encyclopedic point of view, lack of research also may mean lack of high-quality references: the core medical literature differs from primary research, since it operates by aggregating trials. This bibliographic deficit clearly hinders Wikipedia's mission. The ScienceSource project is currently addressing this issue, on Wikidata. Its [[d:Wikidata:ScienceSource focus list|Wikidata focus list]] at WD:SSFL is trying to ensure that neglect does not turn into bias in its selection of science papers.

;The science publishing landscape

[[File:So much to read, so less time.jpg|left|150px]]
In an ideal world ... no, bear with your editor for just a minute ... there would be a format for scientific publishing online that was as much a standard as [[SI units]] are for the content. Likewise cataloguing publications would not be onerous, because part of the process would be to generate uniform [[metadata]]. Without claiming it could be the mythical [[free lunch]], it might be reasonably be argued that sandwiches can be packaged much alike and have barcodes, whatever the fillings.

The best on offer, to stretch the metaphor, is the [[meal kit]] option, in the form of [[XML]]. Where scientific papers are delivered as XML downloads, you get all the ingredients ready to cook. But have to prepare the actual meal of [[slow food]] yourself. See [https://w3c.github.io/scholarly-html/ Scholarly HTML] for a recent pass at heading off XML with HTML, in other words in the native language of the Web.

The argument from [[real life]] is a traditional mixture of frictional forces, vested interests, and the classic irony of the [https://www.cs.kent.ac.uk/people/staff/iau/cornford/cornford7.html principle of unripe time]. On the other hand, [[discoverability]] actually diminishes with the prolific progress of science publishing. No, it really doesn't scale. Wikimedia as movement can do something in such cases. We know from [[open access]], we grok the Web, we have [[VisualEditor#Technical|our own horse]] in the HTML race, we have Wikidata and [[WikiJournal]], and we have the chops to act.

;Wikidata imaged

Around 2.7 million Wikidata items have an illustrative image. These files, you might say, are Wikimedia's [[stock photography|stock images]], and if the number is large, it is still only 5% or so of items that have one. All such images are taken from Wikimedia Commons, which has 50 million media files. One key issue is how to expand the stock.

Indeed, there is a tool. [[m:WDFIST|WD-FIST]] exploits the fact that each Wikipedia is differently illustrated, mostly with images from Commons but also with [[Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria#Policy|fair use]] images. An item that has sitelinks but no illustrative image can be tested to see if the linked wikis have a suitable one. This works well for a volunteer who wants to add images at a reasonable scale, and a small amount of SPARQL knowledge goes a long way in producing checklists.
[[File:Gran Teatro Cáceres.JPG|thumb|Gran Teatro, Cáceres, Spain, at night]]
It should be noted, though, that there are currently 53 Wikidata properties that link to Commons, of which P18 for the basic image is just one. WD-FIST prompts the user to add signatures, plaques, pictures of graves and so on. There are a couple of hundred [[monogram]]s, mostly of historical figures, and [https://query.wikidata.org/#%23defaultView%3AImageGrid%0ASELECT%20%3Fitem%20%3FitemLabel%20%3Fpic%0A%20%20WHERE%20%7B%3Fitem%20wdt%3AP1543%20%3Fpic.%0A%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20SERVICE%20wikibase%3Alabel%20%7B%20bd%3AserviceParam%20wikibase%3Alanguage%20%22%5BAUTO_LANGUAGE%5D%2Cen%22.%20%7D%7D this query] allows you to view all of them. [[commons:Category:Monograms]] and its subcategories provide rich scope for adding more.

And so it is generally. [https://query.wikidata.org/#SELECT%20%3Fitem%20%3FitemLabel%0A%20%20WHERE%20%7B%3Fitem%20wdt%3AP31%20wd%3AQ18610173.%0A%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20SERVICE%20wikibase%3Alabel%20%7B%20bd%3AserviceParam%20wikibase%3Alanguage%20%22%5BAUTO_LANGUAGE%5D%2Cen%22%7D%0A%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%7D The list] of properties linking to Commons does contain a few that concern video and audio files, and rather more for maps. But it contains gems such as P3451 for "nighttime view". Over 1000 of those on Wikidata, but as for so much else, there could be yet more.

Go on. Today is Wikidata's birthday. An illustrative image is always an acceptable gift, so why not add one? You can follow these easy steps: (i) log in at https://tools.wmflabs.org/widar/, (ii) paste the Petscan ID 6263583 into https://tools.wmflabs.org/fist/wdfist/ and click run, and (iii) just add cake.

;WikiCite issue
GLAM ♥ data — what is a gallery, library, archive or museum without a catalogue? It follows that Wikidata must love librarians. Bibliography supports students and researchers in any topic, but open and machine-readable bibliographic data even more so, outside the silo. Cue the WikiCite initiative, which was meeting in conference this week, in the Bay Area of California.
[[File:Wikidata education for librarians group at WikiCite 2018.jpg|thumb|left|Wikidata training for librarians at WikiCite 2018]]

In fact there is a broad scope: "Open Knowledge Maps via SPARQL" and the "Sum of All Welsh Literature", identification of research outputs, Library.Link Network and Bibframe 2.0, OSCAR and LUCINDA (who they?), OCLC and Scholia, all these co-exist on the agenda. Certainly more [[library science]] is coming Wikidata's way. That poses the question about the other direction: is more Wikimedia technology advancing on libraries? Good point.

Wikimedians generally are not aware of the tech background that can be assumed, unless they are close to current training for librarians. A baseline definition is useful here: "[[bash (Unix shell)|bash]], [[git]] and [[OpenRefine]]". Compare and contrast with [[mw:Manual:Pywikibot|pywikibot]], [[GitHub]] and [[m:Mix'n'match/Manual|mix'n'match]]. Translation: scripting for automation, version control, data set matching and wrangling in the large, are on the agenda also for contemporary library work. Certainly there is some possible common ground here. Time to understand rather more about the motivations that operate in the library sector.

<div style="font-size:1.2em; letter-spacing:1px;">'''[[m:Timeless/Newsletter|Newsletter]] • December 2018'''</div>

Welcome to the third issue of the Timeless newsletter, complete with a somewhat dubious explanation of where I've been all this time.

<div style="clear:both; height:1em"></div>
'''Somewhat dubious explanation of where I've been all this time:'''

I suffered a rather bad concussion in October, which knocked me pretty much completely out of commission through November, and I'm still recovering even now. One person = bus factor of one, even though it wasn't actually a bus but a very short flight of stairs.

'''Updates:'''

* Random bugs have been fixed. More bugs have been found. For a full list of horrors, see the [[phab:tag/timeless/|workboard]].
* Implementing themes ([[phab:T131991|T131991]]: the dark/night mode and winter variants of the skin) has proven far more complicated than initially thought, lacking either the extension, or preferably, some core support for this functionality. Thus:
** I have submitted a [[mw:Requests for comment/Themes in core|Request for Comment]] proposing to merge [[mw:Extension:Theme|Extension:Theme]] into core - this will enable skins to specify style variants as distinct options for users to select in their preferences by letting the skin specify the styles separately for each, a much neater way of implementing this than some of the existing hacks.
** [[mw:user:Jack Phoenix|Jack Phoenix]] has already submitted [[gerrit:465451|a patch]] to do this. We simply need the buy-in and consensus to merge it, and to resolve whatever issues may arise from this wider review.

Comments on the RfC ([[mw:Requests for comment/Themes in core|MediaWiki wiki RfC page]], [[phab:T122924|task]]) or bugs, or further reports, are always appreciated.

Until next time, hopefully with no further injuries,

;Learning from Zotero
[[Zotero]] is free software for reference management by the [[Center for History and New Media]]: see [[Wikipedia:Citing sources with Zotero]]. It is also an active user community, and has broad-based [https://www.zotero.org/support/supported_languages language support].
[[File:Zotero logo.png|thumb|Zotero logo]]
Besides the handiness of Zotero's warehousing of personal citation collections, the ''Zotero translator'' underlies the [[mw:citoid|citoid service]], at work behind the VisualEditor. Metadata from Wikidata [[d:Wikidata:Zotero|can be imported]] into Zotero; and in the other direction the [https://github.com/UB-Mannheim/zotkat ''zotkat'' tool] from the University of Mannheim allows Zotero bibliographies to be exported to Wikidata, by item creation. With an extra feature to add statements, that route could lead to much development of the focus list (P5008) tagging on Wikidata, by WikiProjects.
[[File:Zotero-demo-wikipedia.webm|thumb|left|Zotero demo video]]
There is also a large-scale encyclopedic dimension here. The construction of Zotero translators is one facet of [[Web scraping]] that has a strong community and open source basis. In that it resembles the less formal [https://tools.wmflabs.org/mix-n-match/import.php mix'n'match import] community, and growing networks around other approaches that can integrate datasets into Wikidata, such as the use of [[OpenRefine]].

Looking ahead, the thirtieth birthday of the World Wide Web falls in 2019, and yet the ambition to make webpages routinely readable by machines can still seem an ever-retreating mirage. Wikidata should not only be helping Wikimedia integrate its projects, an ongoing process represented by Structured Data on Commons and [[d:Wikidata:Lexicographical data|lexemes]]. It should also be acting as a catalyst to bring scraping in from the cold, with institutional strengths as well as resourceful code.

;Everything flows (and certainly data does)
Recently Jimmy Wales has made the point that [[virtual assistant|computer home assistants]] take much of their data from Wikipedia, one way or another. So as well as getting Spotify to play ''[[Frosty the Snowman]]'' for you, they may be able to answer the question "is the Pope Catholic?" Possibly by asking for disambiguation ([[Pope of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria|Coptic]]?).
[[File:Voice Search Amazon Echo vs Google.webm|thumb|left|[[Amazon Echo]] device using the [[Amazon Alexa]] service in voice search showdown with the Google rival on an [[Android phone]]]]
Headlines about [[data breach]]es are now familiar, but the unannounced circulation of information raises other issues. One of those is [[Gresham's law]] stated as "bad data drives out good". Wikipedia and now Wikidata have been criticised on related grounds: what if their content, unattributed, is taken to have a higher standing than Wikimedians themselves would grant it? See [[q:Otto_von_Bismarck#Misattributed|Wikiquote on a misattribution to Bismarck]] for the usual quip about "law and sausages", and why one shouldn't watch them in the making.

Wikipedia has now turned 18, so should act like as adult, as well as being treated like one. The Web itself turns 30 some time between March and November this year, per [[Tim Berners-Lee]]. If the [[Knowledge Graph]] by Google exemplifies [[Heraclitus#Panta_rhei,_"everything_flows"|Heraclitean]] Web technology gaining authority, contra [[GIGO]], Wikimedians still have a role in its critique. But not just with the teenage skill of [[The Catcher in the Rye|detecting phoniness]].

There is more to beating Gresham than exposing the [[factoid]] and [[urban myth]], where [[WP:V]] does do a great job. Placeholders must be detected, and working with Wikidata is a good way to understand how having one statement as data can blind us to replacing it by a more accurate one. An example that is important to [[open access]] is that, firstly, the term itself needs considerable unpacking, because just being able to read material online is a poor relation of "open"; and secondly, trying to get Creative Commons license information into Wikidata shows up issues with classes of license (such as [[CC-BY]]) standing for the actual license in major repositories. Detailed investigation shows that "everything flows" exacerbates the issue. But Wikidata can solve it.

;What is a systematic review?

[[Systematic review]]s are basic building blocks of [[evidence-based medicine]], surveys of existing literature devoted typically to a definite question that aim to bring out scientific conclusions. They are principled in a way Wikipedians can appreciate, taking a critical view of their sources.
[[File:PRISMA flow diagram.jpg|thumb|PRISMA flow diagram for a systematic review]]
[[Ben Goldacre]] in 2014 wrote (link below) "[...] : the "information architecture" of evidence based medicine (if you can tolerate such a phrase) is a chaotic, ad hoc, poorly connected ecosystem of legacy projects. In some respects the whole show is still run on paper, like it's the 19th century." Is there a Wikidatan in the house? Wouldn't some machine-readable content that is [[structured data]] help?
[[File:Schittny, Facing East, 2011, Legacy Projects.jpg|thumb|left|2011 photograph by Bernard Schittny of the "Legacy Projects" group]]
Most likely it would, but the arcana of systematic reviews and how they add value would still need formal handling. The [[PRISMA standard]] dates from 2009, with an update started in 2018. The concerns there include the corpus of papers used: how selected and filtered? Now that Wikidata has a 20.9 million item bibliography, one can at least pose questions. Each systematic review is a tagging opportunity for a bibliography. Could that tagging be reproduced by a query, in principle? Can it even be second-guessed by a query (i.e. simulated by a protocol which translates into SPARQL)? Homing in on the arcana, do the inclusion and filtering criteria translate into metadata? At some level they must, but are these metadata explicitly expressed in the articles themselves? The answer to that is surely "no" at this point, but can [[text and data mining|TDM]] find them? Again "no", right now. [[Automatic identification]] doesn't just happen.

Actually these questions lack originality. It should be noted though that [[WP:MEDRS]], the reliable sources guideline used here for health information, hinges on the assumption that the usefully systematic reviews of biomedical literature can be recognised. Its nutshell summary, normally the part of a guideline with the highest density of common sense, allows [[literature review]]s in general validity, but [[WP:MEDASSESS]] qualifies that indication heavily. Process wonkery about systematic reviews definitely has merit.

;When in the cloud, do as the APIs do
Half a century ago, it was the era of the [[mainframe computer]], with its air-conditioned room, twitching tape-drives, and appearance in the title of a spy novel ''[[Billion-Dollar Brain]]'' then made into a Hollywood film. Now we have [[cloud computing|the cloud]], with [[server farms]] and the [[client–server model]] as quotidian: this text is being typed on a [[Chromebook]].
[[File:Cloud-API-Logo.svg|thumb|left|Logo of Cloud API on [[Google Cloud Platform]]]]
The term [[Applications Programming Interface]] or API is 50 years old, and refers to a type of software library as well as the interface to its use. While a [[compiler]] is what you need to get high-level code executed by a mainframe, an API out in the cloud somewhere offers a chance to perform operations on a remote server. For example, the multifarious bots active on Wikipedia have owners who exploit the [[mw:API:Main page|MediaWiki API]].

APIs (called [[RESTful API|RESTful]]) that allow for the [[GET (HTTP)|GET HTTP request]] are fundamental for what could colloquially be called "moving data around the Web"; from which Wikidata benefits 24/7. So the fact that the Wikidata SPARQL endpoint at query.wikidata.org has a RESTful API means that, in lay terms, Wikidata content can be GOT from it. The programming involved, besides the [[SPARQL]] language, could be in [[Python (programming language)|Python]], younger by a few months than the Web.

Magic words, such as occur in fantasy stories, are wishful (rather than RESTful) solutions to gaining access. You may need to be a linguist to enter [[Ali Baba]]'s cave or the western door of [[Moria (Middle-earth)|Moria]] (French in the case of "[[Open Sesame (phrase)|Open Sesame]]", in fact, and [[Sindarin]] being the respective languages). Talking to an API requires a bigger toolkit, which first means you have to recognise the tools in terms of what they can do. On the way to the [[wikt:impactful]] or polymathic modern handling of facts, one must perhaps take only tactful notice of tech's endemic problem with documentation, and absorb the insightful point that the code in APIs does articulate the customary procedures now in place on the cloud for getting information. As Owl explained to [[Winnie-the-Pooh]], it tells you The Thing to Do.

;Completely clouded?
[[File:Cloud computing icon.svg|thumb|left|Cloud computing logo]]
Talk of [[cloud computing]] draws a veil over hardware, but also, less obviously but more importantly, obscures such intellectual distinction as matters most in its use. Wikidata begins to allow tasks to be undertaken that were out of easy reach. The facility should not be taken as the real point.

Coming in from another angle, the "executive decision" is more glamorous; but the "administrative decision" should be admired for its command of facts. Think of the attitudes ''[[ad fontes]]'', so prevalent here on Wikipedia as "can you give me a source for that?", and being prepared to deal with complicated analyses into specified subcases. Impatience expressed as a disdain for such [[pedantry]] is quite understandable, but neither [[dirty data]] nor [[false dichotomies]] are at all good to have around.

[[User:Charles Matthews/Facto Post/Issue 13 – 29 June 2018|Issue 13]] and [[User:Charles Matthews/Facto Post/Issue 21 – 28 February 2019|Issue 21]], respectively on [[WP:MEDRS]] and [[systematic review]]s, talk about biomedical literature and computing tasks that would be of higher quality if they could be made more "administrative". For example, it is desirable that the decisions involved be consistent, explicable, and reproducible by non-experts from specified inputs.

What gets clouded out is not impossibly hard to understand. You do need to put together the insights of [[functional programming]], which is a doctrinaire and purist but clearcut approach, with the practicality of [[office software]]. Loopless computation can be conceived of as a seamless forward march of spreadsheet columns, each determined by the content of previous ones. Very well: to do a backward audit, when now we are talking about Wikidata, we rely on integrity of data and its scrupulous sourcing: and clearcut case analyses. The MEDRS example forces attention on purge attempts such as [[Beall's list]].

<div style="font-size:1.2em; letter-spacing:1px;">'''[[m:Timeless/Newsletter|Newsletter]] • April 2019'''</div>

Welcome to the fourth issue of the Timeless newsletter, with a cat! Or maybe not.

<div style="clear:both; height:1em"></div>
'''Un chat qui miaule???'''

It's true! The angry cat, a fundamental part of Timeless, has resulted in confusion and bug reports all across the projects and phabricator. And now it shall be immortalised forever in the new, shiny Timeless logo.

'''Updates:'''

After putting off the project for three months because I got hit in the head with a flight of stairs, and then putting off the project for another two months while working out what the status of the grant was, I have now put off the project even more in order to [[m:Grants:Project/WikiProject X/CollaborationKit MVP/Timeline|focus on my other project for a bit]]. So progress lately has been a bit whims-based as a result:
* The project now has [[commons:File:Timeless logo.svg|a logo]]. For some reason.
* The angry cat in the background is [[mw:Skin:Timeless#Configuration|now customisable]]! Behold: [https://wiki.zaori.org/wiki/Special:BlankPage?useskin=timeless ''not'' a cat]. [[phab:T223163|What would you like to replace it with on ''your'' project?]]
* I broke, unbroke, and then sort of sideways broke all the form styles. [[phab:T221345|Help]].

'''Radar:'''
* The French Wiktionary [[wiktionary:fr:Wiktionnaire:Prise de décision/Habillage Timeless par défaut|voted to set Timeless as their default skin]], with results possibly as you might expect: I ran away and hid, and the WMF said no. A bit of discussion later and we largely agreed that all else aside, this is a bit of a branding issue, but we love the enthusiasm! Also the bug reports that inevitably come out of such a discussion. I'm still working on properly going through those.
* Theme support is [[phab:T122924|still stuck in limbo]], but now we have another [[phab:T217158|skinning RfC]]. tl;dr, we wanna replace the entire skinning system, and Skizzerz'll write a prototype later.

I will be fully resuming work on Timeless next week, or maybe the week after, depending on what madness (or illness) comes out of the Hackathon in Prague. Please come talk to me there to discuss ''strategy''!

;Semantic Web and TDM – a ContentMine view

Two dozen issues, and this may be the last, a [[valediction]] at least for a while.

It's time for a two-year summation of ContentMine projects involving TDM ([[text and data mining]]).

Wikidata and now [[commons:Structured data|Structured Data on Commons]] represent the overlap of Wikimedia with the [[Semantic Web]]. This common ground is helping to convert an engineering concept into a movement. TDM generally has little enough connection with the Semantic Web, being instead in the orbit of [[machine learning]] which is no respecter of the semantic. Don't break a taboo by asking bots "and what do you mean by that?"

The [[d:WD:SS|ScienceSource project]] innovates in TDM, by storing its text mining results in a [[Wikibase]] site. It strives for compliance of its fact mining, on drug treatments of diseases, with an automated form of the relevant [[WP:MEDRS|Wikipedia referencing guideline MEDRS]]. Where [[d:WD:WFM|WikiFactMine]] set up an [[User:Charles Matthews/Facto Post/Issue 22 – 28 March 2019|API]] for reuse of its results, ScienceSource has a SPARQL query service, with look-and-feel exactly that of Wikidata's at query.wikidata.org. It also now has a custom front end, and its content can be [[federated search#Challenges|federated]], in other words used in data mashups: it is one of [[mw:Wikidata Query Service/User Manual/SPARQL Federation endpoints|over 50 sites]] that can federate with Wikidata.

The human factor comes to bear through the front end, which combines a link to the HTML version of a paper, text mining results organised in drug and disease columns, and a SPARQL display of nearby drug and disease terms. Much software to develop and explain, so little time! Rather than telling the tale, ''Facto Post'' brings you ScienceSource links, starting from the how-to video, lower right.

Welcome back to the [[mw:Editing|Editing]] newsletter.

Since [[m:VisualEditor/Newsletter/2018/October|the last newsletter]], the team has released two new features for the [[mw:VisualEditor on mobile|mobile visual editor]] and has started developing three more. All of this work is part of the team's goal to [[metawiki:Wikimedia Foundation Annual Plan/2018-2019/Audiences#Outcome 3: Mobile Contribution|make editing on mobile web simpler.]]

Before talking about the team's recent releases, we have a question for you:

'''Are you willing to try a new way to add and change links?'''

If you are interested, we would value your input! You can try this new link tool in the mobile visual editor on a separate wiki.

''Follow these instructions and share your experience:''

'''[[mw:Topic:V394zwrigth8ii7c|📲 Try Edit Cards]].'''

=== Recent releases ===
The mobile visual editor is a simpler editing tool, for smartphones and tablets using the [[Mw:Reading/Web/Mobile#About|mobile site]]. The Editing team has recently launched two new features to improve the mobile visual editor:

# [[mw:VisualEditor on mobile/Section editing|Section editing]]
#* The purpose is to help contributors focus on their edits.
#* The team studied this with an A/B test. [[mw:VisualEditor on mobile/Section editing#16 June 2019|This test showed]] that contributors who could use section editing were '''1% more likely to publish''' the edits they started than people with only full-page editing.
# [[mw:VisualEditor on mobile#March 1, 2019|Loading overlay]]
#* The purpose is to smooth the transition between reading and editing.

Section editing and the new loading overlay are '''now available to everyone''' using the mobile visual editor.

=== New and active projects ===
This is a list of our most active projects. [[mw:Help:Watching pages|Watch]] these pages to learn about project updates and to share your input on new designs, prototypes and research findings.

*[[mw:VisualEditor on mobile/Edit cards|Edit cards]]: This is a clearer way to add and edit links, citations, images, templates, etc. in articles. You can try this feature now. ''Go here to see how:'' [[mw:Topic:V394zwrigth8ii7c|📲''Try Edit Cards'']]''.''
*[[mw:VisualEditor on mobile/Toolbar refresh|Mobile toolbar refresh]]: This project will learn if contributors are more successful when the editing tools are easier to recognize.
*[[mw:VisualEditor on mobile/VE mobile default|Mobile visual editor availability]]: This A/B test asks: ''Are newer contributors more successful if they use the mobile visual editor?'' We are collaborating with [[mw:VisualEditor on mobile/VE mobile default#26 June 2019 %E2%80%93 Participating wikis and test start date|20 Wikipedias]] to answer this question.
*[[mw:VisualEditor on mobile/Usability improvements|Usability improvements]]: This project will make the mobile visual editor easier to use.  The goal is to let contributors stay focused on editing and to feel more confident in the editing tools.

=== Looking ahead ===

* '''Wikimania:''' Several members of the Editing Team will be attending [https://wikimania2019.wikimedia.org/wiki/ Wikimania] in August 2019. They will lead a session about mobile editing in the [[wmania:2019:Community Growth/Visual editing on mobile: An accessible editor for all|Community Growth space]]. Talk to them about how editing can be improved.
* '''Talk Pages:''' In the coming months, the Editing Team will begin [[mw:Talk pages consultation 2019|improving talk pages]] and communication on the wikis.

=== Learning more ===
The [[mw:VisualEditor on mobile|VisualEditor on mobile]] is a good place to learn more about the projects we are working on. The team wants to talk with you about anything related to editing. If you have something to say or ask, please leave a message at [[mw:Talk:VisualEditor on mobile|Talk:VisualEditor on mobile]].

<div style="font-size:1.2em; letter-spacing:1px;">'''[[m:Timeless/Newsletter|Newsletter]] • August 2019'''</div>

Welcome to the fifth and final issue of the Timeless newsletter!

<div style="clear:both; height:1em"></div>
'''Progress was made. True story.'''

I am happy to announce that after about a year, this delightful project in which absolutely nothing has gone according to plan is coming to a close. Or at least, the [[m:Grants:Project/Timeless/Post-deployment_support|grant-funded portion]] is. Which means we will now be resuming our regular schedule of random whims-based development, you probably won't notice any difference whatsoever unless you use MonoBook, and there's [[m:Grants:Project/Timeless/Post-deployment_support/Final|''a report'']].

'''What's new from the past two months:'''

A lot less than we'd hoped, frankly. We:
* Fixed various bugs, some of which even weren't for stuff I'd just broken two patches previously.
* Resolved sundry compatibility issues for other extensions, templates onwiki, whatever, largely by [[gerrit:532285|removing dumb crap from the css]].
* Implemented some shiny new features you'll probably hate or just never use or actually see, like [[phab:T211357|click-toggled dropdowns]], [[phab:T197520|icons everywhere]], and options to [[phab:T131803|select a default layout]] or [[phab:T132004|set an image for the site header wordmark]].
* Brought the total number of open tasks on the Timeless workboard [[phab:project/reports/1912/|down to ''70'']].

We also wound up with:
* Patches resulting in RelatedArticles working in MonoBook, and FlaggedRevisions showing up in Minerva, unless someone actually managed to turn that off as well. (Blame [[phab:T181242|T181242]].) It's possible we went a little overboard with the whole 'let's close all the tasks!' sprint.
* An unfortunate repeated discovery that themes (the Night/Winter variants I keep insisting ''will happen at some point'') are still [[phab:T122924|pretty far off on the horizon]]. Um.
* Possibly a quite a few more bugs coming your way. This month, and especially the past week, have been a bit of a mess, development-wise. While hopefully none of the worse issues make it to production, please keep the reports coming for whatever you do find and we'll get it fixed as soon as we can. Y'all've been amazing about this, and it's really appreciated.

And I guess that's that. I'm really bad at reporting, and this is a report. For the purposes of the grant, this was a requirement, but do you ''want'' me to keep trying to send these out?

== Editing News #2 – Mobile editing and talk pages – October 2019 ==

<em>[[m:VisualEditor/Newsletter/2019/October|Read this in another language]] • [[m:VisualEditor/Newsletter|Subscription list for this multilingual newsletter]]</em>

Inside this newsletter, the [[mw:Editing|Editing team]] talks about their work on the [[mw:Mobile visual editor|mobile visual editor]], on [[mw:Talk pages project|the new talk pages project]], and at [[wikimania:|Wikimania 2019]].

=== Help ===
'''What talk page interactions do you remember?''' Is it a story about how someone helped you to learn something new? Is it a story about how someone helped you get involved in a group? Something else? Whatever your story is, we want to hear it!

Please tell us a story about how you used a talk page. <mark>Please share a link to a memorable discussion, or describe it on the '''[[mw:Topic:V8d91yh8gcg404dj|talk page for this project]]'''.</mark> The team would value your examples. These examples will help everyone develop a shared understanding of what this project should support and encourage.

=== Talk Pages ===
The [[mw:Talk pages consultation 2019|Talk Pages Consultation]] was a global consultation to define better tools for wiki communication. From February through June 2019, more than 500 volunteers on 20 wikis, across 15 languages and multiple projects, came together with members of the Foundation to create a product direction for a set of discussion tools. The [[mw:Talk pages consultation 2019/Phase 2 report|Phase 2 Report]] of the Talk Page Consultation was published in August. It summarizes the product direction the team has started to work on, which you can read more about here: [[mw:Talk pages project|Talk Page Project project page]].

The team needs and wants your help at this early stage. They are starting to develop the first idea. Please add your name to the [[mw:Talk pages project#Getting involved|'''"Getting involved"''']] section of the project page, if you would like to hear about opportunities to participate.

=== Mobile visual editor ===
The Editing team is trying to make it simpler to edit on mobile devices. The team is changing the [[mw:VisualEditor on mobile|visual editor on mobile]]. If you have something to say about editing on a mobile device, please leave a message at [[mw:Talk:VisualEditor on mobile|Talk:VisualEditor on mobile]].

[[File:50 million desktop visual editor edits.png|thumb|On 16 March 2020, the '''50 millionth edit''' was made using the visual editor on desktop.|400px]]

Seven years ago this week, the [[mw:Editing team|Editing team]] made the visual editor available by default to all logged-in editors using the desktop site at the English Wikipedia. Here's what happened since its introduction:

* The <strong>50 millionth edit using the visual editor on desktop</strong> was made this year. More than <strong>10 million</strong> edits have been made here at the English Wikipedia.
* More than <strong>2 million new articles</strong> have been created in the visual editor. More than 600,000 of these new articles were created during 2019.
* Almost <strong>5 million edits on the mobile site</strong> have been made with the visual editor. Most of these edits have been made since the Editing team started improving the [[mw:Mobile visual editor|mobile visual editor]] in 2018.
* The <strong>proportion of all edits</strong> made using the visual editor has been <strong>increasing every year</strong>.
* Editors have made more than <strong>7 million edits in the 2017 wikitext editor</strong>, including starting <strong>600,000 new articles</strong> in it. The [[mw:2017 wikitext editor|2017 wikitext editor]] is VisualEditor's built-in wikitext mode. You can [[Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures|enable it in your preferences]].
* On 17 November 2019, the [https://discuss-space.wmflabs.org/t/first-edit-made-to-wikipedia-from-outer-space/2254 <strong>first edit from outer space</strong>] was made in the mobile visual editor.
* In 2019, <strong>35% of the edits by newcomers</strong>, and half of their first edits, were made using the visual editor. This percentage has been increasing every year since the tool became available.

=== Reply tool ===
[[File:Reply Tool weekly edits- March - June, 2020.png|thumb|333px|The number of comments posted with the Reply Tool from March through June 2020. People used the Reply Tool to post over <strong>7,400 comments</strong> with the tool.]]

The [[mw:Special:MyLanguage/Talk pages project/replying|<strong>Reply tool</strong>]] has been available as a [[mw:Beta Feature|Beta Feature]] at the Arabic, Dutch, French and Hungarian Wikipedias since 31 March 2020. The [[mw:Talk pages project/replying#Metrics|first analysis showed positive results]].

* More than <strong>300 editors</strong> used the Reply tool at these four Wikipedias. They posted more than <strong>7,400 replies</strong> during the study period.
* Of the people who posted a comment with the Reply tool, about 70% of them used the tool multiple times. About 60% of them used it on multiple days.
* Comments from Wikipedia editors are positive. One said, <span lang="ar" dir="rtl">أعتقد أن الأداة تقدم فائدة ملحوظة؛ فهي تختصر الوقت لتقديم رد بدلًا من التنقل بالفأرة إلى وصلة تعديل القسم أو الصفحة، التي تكون بعيدة عن التعليق الأخير في الغالب، ويصل المساهم لصندوق التعديل بسرعة باستخدام الأداة.</span> ("I think the tool has a significant impact; it saves time to reply while the classic way is to move with a mouse to the Edit link to edit the section or the page which is generally far away from the comment. And the user reaches to the edit box so quickly to use the Reply tool.")[https://ar.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?diff=49242252&oldid=49242144]

The Editing team released the Reply tool as a Beta Feature at eight other Wikipedias in early August. Those Wikipedias are in the Chinese, Czech, Georgian, Serbian, Sorani Kurdish, Swedish, Catalan, and Korean languages. If you would like to use the Reply tool at your wiki, please tell [[User talk:Whatamidoing (WMF)]].

The Reply tool is still in active development. Per request from the Dutch Wikipedia and other editors, you will be able to [[phab:T249391|customize the edit summary]]. (The default edit summary is "Reply".) A "ping" feature is available in the Reply tool's visual editing mode. This feature searches for usernames. Per request from the Arabic Wikipedia, each wiki will be able to [[phab:T258743|set its own preferred symbol]] for pinging editors. Per request from editors at the Japanese and Hungarian Wikipedias, each wiki can [[phab:T249861|define a preferred signature prefix]] in the page [[MediaWiki:Discussiontools-signature-prefix]]. For example, some languages omit spaces before signatures. Other communities want to add a dash or a non-breaking space.

=== New requirements for user signatures ===

* The [[mw:Special:MyLanguage/New requirements for user signatures|new requirements for custom user signatures]] began on 6 July 2020. If you try to create a custom signature that does not meet the requirements, you will get an error message.
* Existing custom signatures that do not meet the new requirements will be unaffected <em>temporarily</em>. Eventually, all custom signatures will need to meet the new requirements. You can [https://signatures.toolforge.org check your signature and see lists of active editors] whose custom signatures need to be corrected. Volunteers have been contacting editors who need to change their custom signatures. If you need to change your custom signature, then please [[mw:Special:MyLanguage/New requirements for user signatures/Help|read the help page]].

=== Next: New discussion tool ===

Next, the team will be working on a tool for quickly and easily starting a new discussion section to a talk page. To follow the development of this new tool, please put the [[mw:Special:MyLanguage/Talk pages project/New discussion|New Discussion Tool]] project page on your watchlist.

The [[mw:Special:MyLanguage/Talk pages project/replying|<strong>Reply tool</strong>]] is available at most other Wikipedias.

* The Reply tool has been deployed as an opt-out [[Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing|preference]] to all editors at the Arabic, Czech, and Hungarian Wikipedias.
* It is also available as a [[mw:Special:MyLanguage/Beta Feature|Beta Feature]] at almost all Wikipedias except for the English, Russian, and German-language Wikipedias. If it is not available at your wiki, you can request it by following [[mw:Topic:W1crei3lyn3mvewc|these simple instructions]].

<strong>Research notes:</strong>

* As of January 2021, <strong>more than 3,500 editors</strong> have used the Reply tool to post about <strong>70,000 comments</strong>.
* There is preliminary data from the Arabic, Czech, and Hungarian Wikipedia on the Reply tool. [[mw:Special:MyLanguage/Talk pages project/Glossary|Junior Contributors]] who use the Reply tool are more likely to publish the comments that they start writing than those who use full-page wikitext editing.[https://nbviewer.jupyter.org/github/wikimedia-research/Discussion-tools-analysis-2020/blob/master/Engagement-Metrics/Reply-Tool-Workflow-Engagement-Metrics.ipynb#Reply-Tool-(Wikitext-and-VE)-vs-Full-Page-Wikitext]
* The Editing and Parsing teams have significantly reduced the number of edits that affect other parts of the page. About 0.3% of edits did this during the last month.[https://dtcheck.toolforge.org/] Some of the remaining changes are automatic corrections for [[Special:LintErrors]].
* [[File:Венов_дијаграм.svg|30px]] <strong>A large [[w:en:A/B test|A/B test]] will start soon.</strong>[https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T252057] This is part of [[mw:Talk pages project/replying#Step%204:%20A/B%20test|the process]] to offer the Reply tool to everyone. [[File:Reply Tool A-B test comment completion.png|alt=Junior contributors comment completion rate across all participating Wikipedias|thumb|296x296px|When newcomers had the Reply tool and tried to post on a talk page, they were more successful at posting a comment. ([https://wikimedia-research.github.io/Reply-tools-analysis-2021/ Source])]]

Earlier this year, the Editing team ran a large study of [[mw:Talk pages project/Replying|the Reply Tool]]. The main goal was to find out whether the Reply Tool helped [[mw:Talk pages project/Glossary|newer editors]] communicate on wiki. The second goal was to see whether the comments that newer editors made using the tool needed to be reverted more frequently than comments newer editors made with the existing wikitext page editor.

The key results were:

* Newer editors who had automatic ("default on") access to the Reply tool were [https://wikimedia-research.github.io/Reply-tools-analysis-2021/ more likely] to post a comment on a talk page.
* The comments that newer editors made with the Reply Tool were also [https://wikimedia-research.github.io/Reply-tools-analysis-2021/ less likely] to be reverted than the comments that newer editors made with page editing.

These results give the Editing team confidence that the tool is helpful.

'''Looking ahead'''

The team is planning to make the Reply tool available to everyone as an opt-out preference in the coming months. This has already happened at the Arabic, Czech, and Hungarian Wikipedias.

The next step is to [[phab:T280599|resolve a technical challenge]]. Then, they will deploy the Reply tool first to the [[phab:T267379|Wikipedias that participated in the study]]. After that, they will deploy it, in stages, to the other Wikipedias and all WMF-hosted wikis.

You can turn on "Discussion Tools" [[Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures|in Beta Features]] now. After you get the Reply tool, you can change your preferences at any time in [[Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing-discussion]].

Nearly all [[mw:Special:MyLanguage/Talk pages project/Usability|new features]] are available now in the [[Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures|Beta Feature for {{int:discussiontools-preference-label}}]].

It will show information about how active a discussion is, such as the date of the most recent comment. There will soon be a new "{{int:skin-action-addsection}}" button. You will be able to turn them off at [[Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing-discussion]]. Please [[mw:Special:MyLanguage/Talk:Talk_pages_project/Usability#c-PPelberg_(WMF)-20230215001000-Feedback:_Proposed_Revisions_to_%22Add_topic%22_button|tell them what you think]].

'''New Project: Edit Check'''

The Editing team is beginning [[mw:Special:MyLanguage/Edit check|a project to help new editors of Wikipedia]]. It will help people identify some problems before they click "{{int:publishchanges}}". The first tool will encourage people to add references when they add new content. Please [[mw:Special:MyLanguage/Help:Watchlist|watch]] that page for more information. You can [[mw:Special:MyLanguage/Editing_team/Community_Conversations#20230303|join a conference call on 3&nbsp;March&nbsp;2023]] to learn more.
