I vaguely remember that Thurber was intimately involved in the series and that the reason that the series was cancelled after one successful season was that Thurber's death made it impossible for the series to continue without him. The article contains the sentence, "William Windom, though, was a tournament chess player, so he most likely [weasel words] added that to the storyline as a personal touch. [better source needed]"
I don't know if this is worth adding to that, but the US Chess Federation lists his final rating as 1540.
