The Libyan [[freedom fighter]] [[Omar Mukhtar]] used this heavily forested mountainous region to resist the [[Italy|Italian]] [[military occupation]] of Libya for more than twenty years, where he organized and devised strategies for the Libyan [[Resistance movement|resistance]] against the Italian [[colonization]].
