Correction: Barnacles are not mollusks, as they do not belong to phylum Mollusca. They are instead members of phylum Arthropoda (clas Crustacea). Their clam-like appearance baffled zoologists until famous 19th century Swiss-American zoologist Jean Louis Rodolphe Agassiz said that a barnacle is "nothing more than a little shrimp-like animal, standing on its head in a limestone house and kicking food into its mouth."

 this article says "The barnacle goose and the similar brant goose were previously considered one species, and were formerly believed to spawn from the goose barnacle.[3] This gave rise to the English name of the barnacle goose and the scientific name of the brant.[2]"  This is incorrect.  The name of the Barnacle Goose gave rise to the name of the Goose Barnacle.  The word 'barnacle' has an etymology that existed before the crustacean, and had reference to the Goose.  If barnacles did not exist, the goose would be called the Barnacle Goose and no one would be confused.
