==Early and personal life==
Born in Kinnegar, [[Holywood, County Down|Holywood]], [[County Down]] in 1874.<ref name=dib>{{cite web|url=https://www.dib.ie/biography/cole-john-james-a1826|title=Cole, John James|work=[[Dictionary of Irish Biography]]|last=Dempsey|first=Pauric J.|access-date=23 December 2021}}</ref> He married Jeanie Jones in 1909, and they had one son and two daughters.<ref name=dib/>

Cole studied at the [[Sullivan Upper School]] in Holywood. He entered business after leaving school. He moved to [[Cavan]] town to establish a pharmacy; he later became an auctioneer, land agent, farmer and cattle breeder.<ref name=dib/>

==Politics==
He was first elected to [[Dáil Éireann]] as an [[Independent politician (Ireland)|independent]] [[Teachta Dála]] (TD) for the [[Cavan (Dáil constituency)|Cavan]] constituency at the [[1923 Irish general election|1923 general election]].<ref name=oireachtas_db>{{cite web|url=https://www.oireachtas.ie/en/members/member/John-James-Cole.D.1923-09-19/|title=John James Cole|work=Oireachtas Members Database|access-date=30 March 2009}}</ref> He lost his seat at the [[June 1927 Irish general election|June 1927 general election]] but regained it at the [[September 1927 Irish general election|September 1927 general election]]. He again lost his seat at the [[1932 Irish general election|1932 general election]] and was an unsuccessful candidate at the [[1933 Irish general election|1933 general election]]. He was elected again at the [[1937 Irish general election|1937 general election]] and was re-elected at the [[1938 Irish general election|1938]] and [[1943 Irish general election|1943]] general elections.<ref name=elecs_irl>{{cite web|url=http://electionsireland.org/candidate.cfm?ID=1155|title=John Cole|work=ElectionsIreland.org|access-date=30 March 2009}}</ref> He again lost his seat at the [[1944 Irish general election|1944 general election]] and was an unsuccessful candidate at the [[1948 Irish general election|1948]], [[1951 Irish general election|1951]], [[1954 Irish general election|1954]] and [[1957 Irish general election|1957]] general elections.

His son [[John Copeland Cole]] was a [[Seanad Éireann|Senator]] from 1957 to 1969.<ref name=IT_20120712/> His brother [[Thomas Loftus Cole]], was an [[Member of parliament|MP]] for Belfast East.<ref name=dib/>

He died in [[Belturbet]] in 1959.<ref name=dib/>
