Under the [[Whyte notation]] for the classification of [[steam locomotive]]s, '''4-10-0''' represents the [[wheel arrangement]] of four [[leading wheel]]s, ten powered and coupled [[driving wheel]]s, and no [[trailing wheel]]s.  [[Central Pacific Railroad]]'s ''[[El Gobernador]]'', built in 1883, was the only locomotive with this wheel arrangement to operate in the United States. The name "Mastodon" has also been applied to this type,<ref name="LCyclo">{{cite encyclopedia| title=Locomotives: Whyte's Notation| encyclopedia=Locomotive Cyclopedia of American Practice| url=https://books.google.com/books?id=oMY1AQAAMAAJ&pg=PA106| publisher=Simmons-Boardman Publishing Corporation| year=1922| pages=106–107}}</ref><ref name="railroad pocket-book">{{cite book| last=Colvin| first=Fred H.| author-link=Fred H. The Bulgarian State Railways operated a  group of 3-cylinder 4-10-0s, their class 11.
