The Santa Fe class 3450 consisted of ten 4-6-4 "Hudson" type steam locomotives built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1927. Built as coal-burners, they were later converted to oil-burning during the 1930s. At the same time, the locomotives were given 79 in driving wheels instead of their original 73 in, and the boiler pressures increased from 220 to. Combined, these changes reduced the starting tractive effort from 44250 to, but increased the top speed and efficiency. Their early service was in the Midwest, between Chicago and Colorado; later, some were assigned to service in the San Joaquin Valley of California between Bakersfield and Oakland.

They were smaller and less powerful locomotives than the later 3460 class "Hudson" type, but were capable of equivalently high speeds.

The first locomotive built, No. 3450, was donated by the Santa Fe in 1955 to the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society's Southern California chapter, and is preserved at the Society's museum in the Los Angeles County Fair grounds at Pomona, California. The locomotive sits inside the Train Museum. It is not operational, but preserved in good condition as a static exhibit. It received a cosmetic restoration between 2013-2021.
The OA class is a solitary steam locomotive built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works for the Wellington and Manawatu Railway (WMR) in New Zealand. Ordered in 1894, it entered service in August of that year as No. 13 and was the first narrow gauge Vauclain compound in the world. In 1908, the WMR and its locomotive fleet were purchased by New Zealand Railways Department (NZR) and incorporated into the national rail network, and, although No. 13 bore a likeness to members of the O class, it was sufficiently different that it warranted separate classification. The designation of OA was created and it was numbered OA 457. It operated for another two decades until it was withdrawn in December 1929 in Auckland. The locomotive was known to WMR staff as "The Lady".

In 1896, a locomotive similar in appearance was ordered by the WMR, No. 16. Its technical specifications were such that when it was acquired by NZR it was classified separately and became the sole member of the OC class.
SM40 is a Polish code-name for a Hungarian shunting and maneuvering purpose diesel electric locomotive after export from Hungary to Poland and in service at PKP.

History
SM40 were imported for the first time from Hungary in 1959, after tests at the distance of 2,185 km with cargo load of 156 t.

The first name for this loco was Lwe58, and in 1960 it was changed to SM40 (according to RN-58/MK0001 regulations).

Items delivered from 1961 had a few modifications, and a different code-name SM41.
SU42 is a Polish diesel-electric locomotive used for light freight and passenger traffic purposes.

History
The SU42 is in fact the same locomotive as SM42 and SP42. The original class SU42 were modifications of class SM42 done during the 1970s. This modification involved the installation of a 500 volt electric train supply for carriage heating, supplied directly by locomotive's generator. The class retained the original SM42 serial number, however most of those converted have now been converted back to SM42 or withdrawn as the carriages using 500 V supply have been withdrawn.

The second phase of modification was carried out between 1999 and 2000 from class SP42. The modification centered on the addition of 3 kV electric train supply. The modified locomotives were classified as class SU42-5xx. 40 of the class were eventually modified and they are based at various depots across the network. Unlike previous iteration, SU42-5xx has electric train heating powered by a separate Caterpillar diesel engine, thus not creating additional load on the locomotive's main engine while heating the train.

Built for shunting purposes, SM42, together with its version SU42, are widely used in passenger traffic on non-electrified lines.

Later modifications
In the 2000s, a number of companies started offering comprehensive rebuilds of the locomotive, involving the replacement of the prime mover, generator and air compressors, upgraded driver's cab (that better isolates against the engine vibrations the original locomotive was famous for) and various changes to the body. Newag offers modification to type 6Dl that is equipped with 3 kV electric train heating.

Other modifications do not offer the electric train heating, making the modified locomotive a member of the SM42 class. Some of the companies that offer these modifications are:
* Newag – 6Dg, 18D
Nicknames
The described loco used to be called by the following names:
*Zebra or stonka (Colorado beetle) – from the original livery
*Wibrator (Vibrator) – from the vibrations the engine produced
*Eleska – from the factory designation: Ls800
*Fablok – from the producer
*Polsat – from the livery similar to one of Polish popular TV operators' colours

History
Between the years 1963–1966, a total of 56 locomotives had been produced — 27 of which were used by PKP. Of the latter 27, the first two units (SM15-01 and SM15-02) were built at the Людиновский тепловозостроительный завод (en: Lyudinovo Diesel Locomotive Factory) and exported to Poland. Production then resumed at the Fablok factory in Chrzanów where the remaining 25 units, earmarked for PKP, were built.

The newly built SM15s were assigned to the depot in Kraków Płaszów, before being withdrawn from service in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when the SM42 series replaced them. Despite their relatively short operational history, the engineers who drove the locomotives remember them as being very powerful machines.

Technical data
The SM15 is equipped with a Soviet 550 kW diesel engine (a number of SM15s had Polish V12CD9 engines installed, rather than the Soviet variant) with hydromechanical transmission. Certain models destined for use in industry had hydraulic transmission, and these carried the designation Ls750Hu. The SM15 is a B′B′ locomotive, which means that the unit runs on two bogies, with all axles powered.

The main reason behind the SM15's short operational lifespan was the unreliability of its transmission and power units.

Preserved Units
Currently, there are three known examples of the SM15 in preservation:

*SM15-17 is an exhibit at the Warsaw Railway Museum
*SM15-22 has been kept back as a monument at the Technical Rail College in Tarnowskie Góry
Ok1 is the Polish designation of a Prussian steam locomotive, the Prussian P 8, used on Polish State Railways. Production of the P 8 lasted from 1908 until 1928 and this locomotive was used on practically all European railway lines.

After the end of World War I, 192 Class P 8 engines were handed over as a reparation to Poland, including two machines for Free City of Danzig, where they were re-designated as Class Ok1 locomotives (numbers: Ok1-1 to Ok1-190 and Ok1-1Dz and 2Dz for Danzig machines). Since the class was considered successful, further 65 locomotives were built in Germany at Polish order in 1922-1923 (designated Ok1-201 to 265).

During World War II all the locomotives were captured by the Germans or Soviets and most were pressed into the German Railways. After the war, along with new war reparations, Poland received 429 locomotives P 8 (numbers Ok1-1 to 429), what made it by far the most numerous passenger locomotive in the country. They were used until the late 1970s - last locomotive was withdrawn from line service in 1981. A few engines were preserved, including Ok1-359 (see the photograph), which is stabled at the Wolsztyn museum.
PKP class OKl27 is a class of ordinary passenger (O) tank (K) 2-6-2 (l) steam locomotives designed in 1927 for Polskie Koleje Państwowe (Polish State Railways, PKP). It was the first completely Polish construction. The design was prepared by eng. Bryling.

History
Production
Hipolit Cegielski Metal Works in Poznań produced 122 engines in the period of 1928–1933.

Operation
The OKl27 class serviced mainly local transport, especially suburban lines.

Wartime
After the German invasion of Poland in World War II, 107 of the 122 OKl27 locomotives were taken into the Deutsche Reichsbahn fleet as 75 1201 to 75 1307. The remaining 15 were taken into the stock of the Soviet Railways; all but two of which came into German hands and were renumbered 75 1308 to 75 1320.

After the war, most locomotives were restored to Poland and renumbered. While the post-war class remained the same, locomotives were renumbered at random, so a locomotive's pre- and post war identities are (usually) completely different.

Preservation
Four engines have survived:
*OKl27-10 in Skierniewice (as an exhibit),
*OKl27-26 in Warsaw Railroad Museum (as an exhibit),
*OKl27-27 in Gdynia (as an exhibit), and
The London and North Western Railway (LNWR) "Precursor Tank" Class was a type of 4-4-2 tank steam locomotive. Initially, they were put to work on local services between Sutton Coldfield and Birmingham, and also between Watford and London Euston. In 1921, they were reported as being employed on the latter to the near-total exclusion of other locomotive types, as well as on other routes. 1572, which was possibly one of the earliest locomotives to have the initials "L&NWR" on its sides replaced by "LMS", was noted to be working on the Morecambe branch in 1923.
The Southern Railway E1/R was a class of 0-6-2T tank steam locomotive designed for light passenger and freight duties. They were rebuilt from earlier LB&SCR E1 class 0-6-0T locomotives originally built 1874–1883. The rebuilt locomotives were intended to be used in the West of England.

Construction
In 1927, there was a surplus of the Stroudley ‘E’ tanks in service on the Central Section of the Southern Railway, many of which were in good condition as they had been fitted with larger boilers by D. E. Marsh after 1911. At the same time there was a need for additional tank locomotives in the Western Section for use in shunting, station piloting and particularly for services on the North Cornwall line to Padstow.

Ten locomotives had their frames extended, bunkers and water tanks enlarged at Brighton works over the next two years. A pony truck of the same design as a ’N’ class locomotive was also added to create a radial trailing axle, making them 0-6-2T. The rebuilt locomotives were dispatched to the Western section during 1928 and 1929 and found to be successful. Some complaints from passengers about rough riding on the meandering North Cornwall line were addressed by having the locomotives on this line re-balanced during 1936 while other locomotives that weren't balanced were restricted to local and shunting and banking duties.

The new class performed well for nearly twenty years but withdrawal commenced in 1955 and they were finally all replaced by Ivatt's prairie tanks by 1959.
The Caledonian Railway 300 Class were freight 0-6-0 tender engines introduced in 1918 and designed by William Pickersgill. Forty-three were built between 1918 and 1920. They were numbered 294–324, 280, 281, 670–679 by the Caledonian Railway.

Design
The locomotives were based on the Caledonian Railway 30 Class, a superheated version of the Caledonian Railway 652 Class, both designed by John F McIntosh. They were introduced between 1918 and 1920 at St. Rollox Works, Glasgow, being built in a series of 4 batches (St. Rollox Lot No. Y119-Y120, Y122-Y123). The cylinders were reduced in diameter by 1in from the 30 Class, though the wheelbase, wheel spacing and wheel diameter was the same.

The 300 Class would have several variations of the basic design during production. These would mainly involve superheating and the inclusion of piston or slide valves, with each combination of valves and boiler being constructed.

Visually, the locomotives looked similar to the 30 Class, with the main differences being the absence of the raised front running board in front of the smokebox and cylinders and the wing plates on the side of the smokebox.

The first 12 members of the class (300-311) were constructed with steel fireboxes. Later locomotives would have copper fireboxes and the steel fireboxes on these members would be replace with copper ones by 1922.

In 1925, No. 305 and 317 (Now renumbered LMS 17661 and 17673 respectively) were fitted with vacuum ejectors. This was so that they could use continuous vacuum brakes on compatible rolling stock, primarily passenger trains.

Ownership changes
In 1923, they all passed to the London, Midland and Scottish Railway, and were classified 3F, and renumbered 17650–17692, along with gaining additional lamp irons. On nationalisation in 1948, the twenty-nine survivors passed into British Railways stock, and were renumbered by adding 40000 to their LMS numbers.
Only three, 17567, 17598 and 17610 (all 812s), had been withdrawn by the time of nationalisation in 1948. The last locomotive in service was not withdrawn until 1963.
It is based at the Strathspey Railway. == Belgian derivatives ==

Belgian State Railways (SNCB-NMBS) derived three series of steam locomotives (891 units) from the class 812 between 1899 and 1914. They had a shallower firebox, able to burn semi-bituminous coal and briquettes, allowing a shorter wheelbase due to its positioning above the rear axle. There were three classes:
*Type 30 – first variant with several details in common with the Caledonian engines (cab windows, gauges, and tender coupling). 82 built between 1899 and 1901.
*Type 32 (later renamed Type 44) – more powerful and fitted with a Belgian cab, higher steam pressure, new gauges and tender coupling. 502 built between 1901 and 1910.
* (later renamed Type 41) – same features but improved with a Schmidt superheater. 307 built between 1905 and 1914.
Until 1909, they were the only new engines used with freight trains. They were also used on suburban and local passenger trains and some expresses on hilly sections. Most of them were retired between 1947 and 1959. Some of them were then used as stationary boilers and two of them (44.225 and 41.195) survive in museums. A third one (44.021) was kept as a parts donor and scrapped in 2002.
Performance
The first of the T3s, No.901 was outshopped from Darlington Works in November 1919. A month later the NER organised a test train, over the Newcastle to Carlisle line, including a brake van and the company's dynamometer car to record the locomotive's performance. No.901 had 1,402 LT in tow but handled the load with ease, registering both high power and steady acceleration. There were no problems starting on a 1 in 298 (0.335 %) grade and on the return, with a reduced load of 787 LT, the engine was untroubled by gradients as severe as 1 in 107 (0.93%).

LNER
Despite their prowess, the original quintet of T3s was not augmented by the North Eastern Railway, a move that would have pleased footplate crews who disliked having to lubricate and maintain the centre cylinder and valve gear. Instead the enlargement of the class came under LNER. it authorised the construction of ten additional T3s and these emerged from Darlington Works during 1924.

Of the new engines two were allocated to York and a further four went to Hull. The remaining four gravitated to their natural habitat, Tyne Dock depot near South Shields. It was there eventually that all 15 T3s/Q7s congregated. Here they performed the role they were designed for. This was to haul 700 LT rakes of iron ore hoppers to the steelworks at Consett 1000 ft above sea level. On the steepest section, as severe as 1 in 35 (2.86%) in places, one 0-8-0 pulled while another pushed.

British Railways
All 15 passed into British Railways ownership in 1948 and they were numbered 63460-63474. They remained master of their task till the arrival of BR Standard Class 9F 2-10-0s in the 1950s. With the loss of their bread and butter work British Railways retired all 15 of the Q7s in November and December 1962.

Preservation
One, NER 901 (BR 63460) has survived and is currently on display at Darlington Railway Centre and Museum. It is the newest exhibit at the museum.

Models
DJH Models has made a kit for 1:76 (OO gauge) of the class
