Munmyo houses a shrine to Confucius known as Daeseongjeon, or "Hall of Great Achievement." The main gate leading to the shrine Sinsammun, literally "Spirit Three Gate", is open only on special occasions such as [[Seokjeon Daeje]]. The central gate is reserved for the spirit of Confucius and his disciple, and no one else may enter through this gate. The Munmyo is based on [[Confucian]] practices from China, where [[Confucius]] and followers of his teachings were honored and venerated. Temples dedicated to [[Confucius]] and other disciples called "temples of Confucius" became widespread during the [[Tang dynasty]]. This idea was brought to [[Korea]] where it was adopted. The buildings of Munmyo were first constructed in 1398, but they were destroyed in a fire in 1400, and rebuilt in 1407. The temple was again destroyed during [[Japanese invasions of Korea (1592–1598)|Japanese invasions of Korea]] in 1592–1598, and the Daeseongjeon was rebuilt in 1601, and Myeongnyundang in 1606 with funds raised by students of [[Sungkyunkwan]]. The musicians are provided by the [[National Gugak Center]]. He is most famous for having defended [[Siege of Jinju|Jinju Castle]] against the Japanese invaders during the [[Japanese invasions of Korea (1592–1598)|Seven Years' War]]. He came from the [[Andong Kim clan|(old) Andong Kim clan]].

==Background==
Kim Simin was born in [[Chungcheong|Chungcheong Province]] in 1554, the son of Kim Ch'unggap. Historically, he is the 12th generation descendant of the [[Goryeo]] period general [[Kim Bang-gyeong]] (김방경, 金方慶; 1212–1300).[[File:Kim Si-min.jpg|thumb|Statue of Kim Simin at the Jinju Fortress]]

==Government==
In 1578, Kim passed the government military examination and was appointed as a training official. When he inspected the available weaponry and soldiers, he found that none were satisfactory for proper training. Thus he went to see the Minister of War concerning the fact that the nation would be under peril if a sudden crisis occurred and the national soldiers were not ready. However, the Minister replied that no such crisis can occur in such a peaceful time and that a strong military could frighten the peasants and therefore rejected Kim's proposition of a well prepared military.

Kim continued to plead to the Minister but as he was constantly rejected, he removed his military clothing in front of the minister, stepped on them and left the room. In 1583, when [[Nitangjie]] ({{Korean|hangul=니탕개|hanja=尼湯介|labels=no}}), the [[Jurchen people|Jurchen]] defect rebelled against the Joseon government in Hoeryeong, Kim rejoined the armed forces under General [[Jeong Eon-sin]]. As the second-in-command, he earned great merit in defeating the Jurchens.

==Japanese Invasions and Siege of Jinju==
Kim was made an official in [[Jinju Fortress|Jinju Castle]] in 1591, and with the sudden death of the castle's guardian Yi Gyeong, and the beginning of the [[Imjin Wars]] he came to be the commander of the fortress. From there, he acted decisively to fortify the castle.

During the Wars, he defeated Japanese forces at [[Sacheon]] and [[Goseong County, South Gyeongsang|Goseong]] and captured the Japanese commander ''Pyeongsotae'' at [[Jinhae]]. With this merit he was appointed ''Right Gyeongsang provincial army district Commander'' ({{Korean|hangul=경상우도병마절도사|labels=no}}) and once again defeated the Japanese at [[Geumsan]].

The Japanese general [[Ukita Hideie]] and [[Hosokawa Tadaoki]] agreed on taking Jinju castle because if the Japanese captured it, it would open up a new road to Jeolla, and they would be able to attack [[Gwak Jae-u]]'s guerilla forces hiding in the area. Jeolla was also place for plenty of loot. Ukita also agreed to recapture [[Changwon]], a small fortress that led to Jinju castle. Therefore, an army of 20,000 men to recapture [[Changwon]] and Jinju set out.

The Japanese heartily approached Jinju castle. They expected another easy victory at Jinju but Kim defied the Japanese and stood firm with his 3,800 men. Again, the Koreans were outnumbered. Kim had recently acquired around 170 [[arquebuse]]s, equivalent to what the Japanese used. He had his men trained with this new equipment and believed he could defend Jinju.

The Japanese charged and began to bring ladders to scale the wall. They also brought a siege tower to try to gain the higher ground. As a counter, the Koreans unleashed massive volleys of cannon balls, arrows, and bullets. Surprised, Hosokawa tried another angle of approach by using his arquebuses to cover the soldiers scaling the wall. This still had no success because the Koreans ignored the bullets and smashed ladders with rocks and axes. When the Koreans began to lob mortar rounds down at the Japanese, the Japanese began to lose even more men.

After three days of fighting, Kim was hit by a bullet on the side of his head and fell, unable to command his forces. The Japanese commanders then pressed even harder on the Koreans to dishearten them. But the Koreans fought on. The Japanese soldiers were still unable to scale the walls even with heavy fire from arquebuses. The Koreans were not in a good position since Kim Simin was wounded and the garrison was now running low on ammunition.

However, [[Gwak Jae-u]] one of the main leaders of the irregular armies of Korea arrived at night with an extremely small band, not enough to relieve the Koreans at Jinju. Gwak ordered his men to grab attention by blowing on horns and making noises. About 3,000 guerrillas and irregular forces arrived at the scene. At this time, the Japanese commanders realized their danger and were forced to abandon the siege and retreated. The irregular army was too small to relieve Jinju. But, the retreat of Japanese soldiers heartened the Koreans and the biggest thing earned from the siege was that the Korean morale was boosted greatly.

==Death==
The Japanese general [[Ukita Hideie]] and [[Hosokawa Tadaoki]] commanding twenty-thousand troops, surrounded and besieged Jinju Castle. For seven days and nights, the 3,800 Koreans defending the castle repeatedly repelled and defeated the Japanese, but Kim was killed in action from an arquebus round to the head.

In 1604, Kim was awarded the posthumous title Sangrakgun ({{Korean|hangul=상락군|hanja=上洛君|labels=no}}).

== Biography ==
Hwang Hŭi was an official of Goryeo. He became an official of Joseon in 1394. Hwang Hŭi was once banished from Seoul because he advocated for [[Grand Prince Yangnyeong|Yangnyeong]], the eldest prince of [[King Taejong]], despite his bad behavior in 1418. After [[Sejong the Great|King Sejong the Great]]'s enthronement, Hwang Hŭi got reappointed and held many ministerial posts. Hwang Hŭi was appointed as a prime minister in 1431 and served until 1449. He retired from the government after 18 years.

He distributed grain seeds for improving farming, and ordered each province to plant a lot of mulberry trees to enrich human life. Goh began his career in civil service in the 1960s, when he joined the Ministry of Home Affairs as a probationary officer. He was promoted through various positions, including the [[Governor of South Jeolla Province|Governor of South Jeolla]] from 1975 to 1979, the Minister of Transportation from 1980 to 1981 and Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries from 1981 to 1982.<ref name=":0"/>

==Early life==
Choi was born in Wonju-myeon, [[Wonju]], [[Kōgen-dō]], [[Korea under Japanese rule|Korea, Empire of Japan]] (now in [[Gangwon Province, South Korea]]). Choi was born into a {{Transliteration|ko|rr|[[yangban]]}} (upper class) family; his grandfather had been a scholar at the [[Sungkyunkwan]]. During this period, Choi used the Japanese name {{nihongo|'''Umehara Keiichi'''|梅原圭一}}.

After graduating from [[Kyunggi High School]] and the Tokyo Higher Normal School (today the [[University of Tsukuba]]) with diplomas in English language and literature, Choi briefly worked as a teacher at the Taikyū Public Junior High School, before moving to [[Manchukuo]] for studies at the {{ill|Taidō Academy|ja|大同学院}}. Choi graduated in 1943; two years later he became a professor at the Keijō Normal School.

==Political career==
Choi served as Ambassador to [[Malaysia]] from 1964 to 1967, [[foreign minister]] from 1967 to 1971; and as prime minister from 1975 to 1979.

After the assassination of [[Park Chung Hee]] in 1979, Choi became acting president; the prime minister stood next in line for the presidency under ''Article 48'' of the [[Yushin Constitution]]. Due to the unrest resulting from Park's authoritarian rule, Choi promised democratic [[Elections in South Korea|elections]], as under Park elections had been widely seen as rigged. Choi also promised a new constitution to replace the highly authoritarian Yushin Constitution. Choi was the sole candidate in [[1979 South Korean presidential election|an election on 6 December]] for the balance of Park's term, becoming the country's fourth president.

==Coup and resignation==
In December 1979, Major General [[Chun Doo-hwan]] and close allies within the military staged a [[Coup d'état of December Twelfth|coup d'état]] against Choi's government. They quickly removed the army chief of staff and virtually controlled the government by early 1980.

In April 1980, due to increasing pressure from Chun and other politicians, Choi appointed Chun head of the [[Korean Central Intelligence Agency]]. In May, Chun declared [[martial law]] and [[Coup d'état of May Seventeenth|dropped all pretense of civilian government]], becoming the ''[[de facto]]'' ruler of the country and reducing Choi to a figurehead. By then, student protests were escalating in Seoul and [[Gwangju]]. The protests in Gwangju resulted in the [[Gwangju Democratization Movement|Gwangju uprising]] in which about 987 civilians were killed within a five-day period by Chun's military.

During his career, James worked at Intel Corporation as a database programmer and Deloitte Consulting as a management consultant for several Fortune 500 clients including Honeywell, Microsoft, Daimler Chrysler, and Boeing.

James's family immigrated to the U.S. when he was three years old, and his curiosity for business and entrepreneurship began at the early age of 11 where he started a window cleaning marketing service. At the ripe age of 13, he started reading The Wall Street Journal and began his studies into the world of business and finance. After graduating high school, he started an investment company called Sun & Associates with $5,000 at the age of 18 and became a multimillionaire by age 22 when he graduated (Cum Laude) from the University of Washington.

He has previous publishing background as one of the owners of [[KoreAm|Koream magazine]], which was an award-winning monthly magazine dedicated to news, commentary, politics, lifestyle and culture published in the United States. It was the oldest and most widely circulated English-language monthly magazine for the Asian American community. He was also the owner of Audrey Magazine, which was an award-winning national publication covering the Asian experience, as seen from the perspective of Asian American women. Audrey covered Asians and Asian Americans in popular culture, fashion and beauty trends, lifestyle and travel, as well as social and cultural issues relevant to Asians and Asian Americans.

'''Buyeo Yung''' (615–682) was the eldest son of [[King Uija of Baekje|King Uija]], the last king of [[Baekje]]. He was appointed crown prince in 644, and would have been the kingdom's 32nd ruler. He is known as the progenitor of Buyeo Seo Clan (부여 서씨/扶餘徐氏) where he changed his surname to Seo.

After his father was overthrown by an alliance of [[Silla]] and the Chinese [[Tang dynasty]] in 660, Buyeo Yung was sent into exile at the Tang capital [[Luoyang]], along with his father. After the defeat of the Baekje restoration movement led by [[Boksin]] and [[Dochim]] at the [[Battle of Baekgang]], which had sought to place Yung's brother [[Buyeo Pung]] on the throne, Tang felt the need for a ruler who could pacify the Baekje area. Beginning in 664, Buyeo Yung served briefly as the governor of the [[Ungjin Commandery]] ({{Korean|hangul=웅진도독부|hanja=熊津都督府|labels=no}}) which Tang established to oversee the former territory of Baekje.

After Silla expelled Tang forces from the Korean peninsula in 676, Buyeo Yung returned to Luoyang, where he spent the rest of his days.

He is remembered primarily as a leader of the Baekje Revival Movement to restore the kingdom after the capital fell in 660 to the [[Silla–Tang alliance]]. Later after their defeat he became a general of the [[Tang dynasty]]. In China his name was read as "''Heichi Changzhi''".<ref>Book of Zhou</ref><ref>Samguk Sagi</ref>

==Background==
In 1929 the tomb of Heukchi Sangji was discovered and excavated in [[Luoyang]], [[China]]. According to the ''[[Samguk Sagi]]'', he was a man of the West Be (Bu, District) in Baekje who had surrendered to the army of the [[Tang dynasty]] at the fall of Baekje in 660, and became a distinguished Tang general. The epitaph states that his clan was a collateral branch of the Baekje royal family (Buyeo clan, 扶餘氏) but since their ancestors were enfeoffed with the Heuk-chi country (黑齒國), their descendants took this name. The epitaph also states that the Heukchi clan leaders held the rank of Dalsol (達率, 2nd court rank). According to the epitaph his great-grandfather was named Mundae (文大), his grandfather Deokhyeon (德顯), and his father was Sacha (沙次).<ref>{{cite book|last1=Hong|first1=Wontack|title=Massive Influx of the Paekche People from the Korean Peninsula|date=2012|pages=4–5}}</ref>

==Baekje revival movement==
In 660 a coalition of about 180,000 men of the [[Silla–Tang alliance]] led by Tang's [[Su Dingfang]] and Silla's [[Kim Yu-sin]] attacked Baekje and took the capital of [[Sabi (Korea)|Sabi]]. Sangji fled with several other generals to the Gangsan Fortress and joined the Baekje Revival Movement. He and his followers gathered 30,000 men in 10 days. Tang's [[Su Dingfang]] seemed to be eager to defeat him and [[Baekje]] people. But he won continuously reoccupying 200 or more castles.<ref>Samguk Sagi, Scroll 28</ref>

In 663, Silla and Tang counterattacked, and besieged the restoration movement at a fortress known as Juryu Castle (주류성/周留城).At this point Boksin appears to have betrayed the restoration movement. He had [[Dochim]] killed and sought to slay Prince Pung as well. However, Pung killed him first, and fled to [[Goguryeo]]. The restoration movement was destroyed shortly thereafter at the [[Battle of Baekgang]]. During this battle his follower Yong Sak betrayed him for the Tang but Heukchi Sangji kept marching onward defeating several Chinese armies. He surrendered and the Tang appointed him as the Outer General of the Lieutenant's Army and the Yangju Citizen of the Lieutenant's Army.

==General of Tang==
In 687, when [[Emperor Ruizong of Tang|Emperor Ruizong]]'s mother [[Wu Zetian|Empress Dowager Wu]] (later known as Wu Zetian) served as [[regent]], there was an invasion by the [[Eastern Tujue]] khan [[Ashina Gudulu]] and his general Ashide Yuanzhen (阿史德元珍). Empress Dowager Wu commissioned the ethnically [[Baekje]] general Heukchi Sangji, assisted by [[Li Duozuo]], to defend against Ashina Gudulu's attack, and they were able to defeat Eastern Tujue forces at Huanghuadui (黃花堆, in modern [[Shuozhou]], [[Shanxi]]), causing Eastern Tujue forces to flee.

==Death==
But Heukichi and his patron General Zhao felt out of favour from Wu Zetian and the two was sentenced to prison when they were slandered against. Finally, he came to be in chains and sentenced to death in 689.

She debuted in 1999 and sold her first album, ''Asura'', over 300,000 copies and her second album, ''Seomoon Tak II'', over 300,000 copies. After she debuted in South Korea, she regularly had more than 1,000 live performances per year, and radio and TV shows appearances. She released 6 studio albums (Korean), 2 studio albums (Japanese), and 2 single albums, and recorded multiple movie and television soundtracks. Marty Friedman, the guitarist of Megadeth, also featured her second Japanese album.

In 2012, she appeared on the South Korean singing competition television show ''[[I Am a Singer]] 2''. She survived for five months until the final round of the season.

Upon the release of her second single in summer 2013, she started a project band, Seomoon Tak Band, which held several concerts in South Korea. Seomoon Tak has been performing in small and large venues around the world, including the latest performances in 2022 in New York City and New Orleans.

In 2022, Seomoon Tak co-founded the TAK Company, an entertainment, food and beverage servicing company in the U.S. to promote Korean culture and entertainment.

While working in a pasta restaurant, Hwangbo was discovered by producer and comedian [[Lee Sang-min (singer)|Lee Sang-min]]. Before her debut, she was an apprentice to Lee Sang-min while she was part of the band Bros in 1999.

In 2000, Hwangbo debuted as part of the female group [[Chakra (band)|Chakra]]. She started as a vocalist and rapper, and later became the leader of the group. Hwangbo went into a period of depression after Chakra dissolved in 2006 due to financial difficulties.{{citation needed|date=December 2018}} She became involved in various volunteer work, especially in Africa and the Middle East. She appeared in few shows such as X-Man and Love Letter. During this time, she cultivated an unfeminine image, due to her strong gestures of frankness and simplicity. It was also cataloged by the best DJs in Europe as the No. 1 dance theme.

She hosted several television programs such as ''Nodaji'', ''Finding Delicious'', and ''Human Mentor''. In 2008 and 2009, she was a member of the first season of ''[[Infinity Girls]]'', a female version of ''[[Infinite Challenge]]'', broadcast by [[MBC Every 1]]. Ŭlchi Mundŏk was born in the mid-6th century and died sometime after 618, although the exact date is unknown. ''Haedong Myŏngjangjŏn'' ({{Korean|해동명장전|海東名將傳|labels=no}}), known as the "Biographies of Famed Korean Generals", written in the 18th century, states that he was from Seokda Mountain (石多山) near [[Pyongyang]]. At the time of his birth, [[Goguryeo]] was a powerful state, frequently at war with its neighbors.

In 589, the [[Sui dynasty]] conquered several surrounding states and launched several large military campaigns against [[Goguryeo]], which was unwilling to submit to its dominance.

Ŭlchi Mundŏk was a cultured man, skilled in both the [[martial arts|martial]] and [[scholar-official|literary]] arts. He eventually rose to become the supreme commander of Goguryeo. The name ''Ŭlchi'' may actually be a Goguryeo title.

== The Battle of Salsu River ==

After the founding of [[Sui dynasty|Sui]] in 589, a precarious peace was maintained for several years between the new Chinese dynasty and [[Goguryeo]]. However, in 597, [[Yeongyang of Goguryeo|Yeongyang]] launched an attack on the Sui at the [[Battle of Linyuguan]]. In response, Sui invaded Goguryeo, but the invasion was defeated due to constant ambushes and unfavorable weather.

In the early 7th century, [[Emperor Yang of Sui|Emperor Yang]] learned of a secret correspondence between Goguryeo and the [[Eastern Turkic Khaganate]]. Emperor Yang demanded [[Yeongyang of Goguryeo|Yeongyang]] come and submit personally to him or face an "imperial tour of his territories". When Yeongyang failed to do so, Emperor Yang prepared for war. He mustered an army of over 1,133,000 troops and more than 2 million auxiliaries and personally led them against Goguryeo in 612. The Sui army quickly overran Goguryeo's border defenses, then camped on the banks of the [[Liao River]] and prepared to bridge it.

Ŭlchi Mundŏk, commissioned as the Field Marshal, was called upon to defend the nation. He prepared his troops to meet the numerically superior Sui forces with a strategy of deception, using feigned retreats and sudden attacks. After the Sui forces crossed the [[Liao River]], a small contingent was sent to attack the city of [[Liaoyang|Yodong]], but was repulsed by Ŭlchi Mundŏk's forces. As the rainy season progressed, the Sui forces launched other small probing attacks, but held off from making any large moves before the end of the rainy season.

When the rains stopped, Emperor Yang moved his forces to the banks of the [[Yalu River]] in northwestern Korea and prepared for a major battle. Fighting only small engagements at times and places of his choosing, Ŭlchi Mundŏk drew the Sui forces further and further from their supply centers. Emperor Yang sent an advance force of over 305,000 troops to take the city of [[Pyongyang]]. After allowing the force to approach the city, Field Marshal Ŭlchi Mundŏk ambushed it. His forces attacked from all sides, driving the Sui troops back in utter confusion. His troops pursued the retreating army, slaughtering them at will. Records claim that only 2,800 men of the massive force returned alive to the main Chinese army. This battle, the [[Battle of Salsu]], came to be known as one of the most glorious military triumphs in Korea's national history.

After the battle, winter began to set in and the Sui forces, short on provisions, were forced to return home in defeat.

The [[Sui dynasty]] was beginning to disintegrate and [[Emperor Yang]] decided that he urgently needed to expand his empire in order to regain power, but two more attacks on [[Goguryeo]] in the following spring were met with similar disasters, and eventually internal rebellion in China forced him to abandon his desire for Goguryeo. By 618, the relatively short-lived Sui dynasty was replaced by the [[Tang dynasty]]. Field Marshal Ŭlchi Mundŏk's strategy and leadership had protected Goguryeo from Chinese expansion into the Korean peninsula.

== Legacy ==
One of the most distinguished military leaders of the [[Goguryeo]] period, Ŭlchi Mundŏk's leadership and tactical acumen were the decisive factors in defeating the [[Sui dynasty|Sui]] invasion. Facing numerically superior forces, he developed a strategy that allowed him to secure a decisive victory. Such brilliant tactical success earned him a permanent place among Korea's most famous leaders. [[Kim Bu-sik]], the author of the ''[[Samguk Sagi]]'', also attributed the victory over [[Sui dynasty|Sui]] to Ŭlchi Mundŏk.

In [[Korea]], Ŭlchi Mundŏk is recognized as one of the greatest figures in its national history. During the reign of [[Hyeonjong of Goryeo|Hyeonjong]] in the [[Goryeo]] period, a shrine to Ŭlchi Mundŏk was built near [[Pyongyang]]. In the succeeding [[Joseon]] period, he remained just as revered a figure. [[Yang Seong-ji]], a scholar and high-ranking bureaucrat of 15th century Joseon, and [[An Jeong-bok]], a [[Silhak]] historian of 18th century Joseon, both thought highly of him. Furthermore, King [[Sukjong of Joseon|Sukjong]] ordered the construction of another shrine in honor of Ŭlchi Mundŏk in 1680.

At a time when Korea was suffering under the yoke of [[Korea under Japanese rule#On the road to annexation|Japanese imperialism]], a fuller assessment of Ŭlchi Mundŏk was commenced by the Korean historian [[Shin Chaeho]], who published a biography of the famed general in 1908 and held him out as an example of Korea's traditional nationalist spirit. Ŭlchi Mundŏk is still celebrated as a national hero. One of the most preeminent Korean scholars of the 20th century, [[Lee Ki-baik]], noted that Ŭlchi Mundŏk's efforts in halting the Sui attempt at conquest stand as one of the earliest examples of Korean attempts to fend off foreign domination.
