Student Application Template
To fill this in, copy the source text. Please don't rename the template.
This is a suggestion for the kind of information we'll find useful from students in their submissions. Remember -- you're going to be committing to several months' work. The more information and planning you can provide up-front, the more we (and Google!) will have to go on when we're ranking your application. Do not forget adding your submission at SummerOfCode2016/StudentApplications

Background: I am a first year computer science student studying at Michigan Tech. I've used GNU Linux as my primary and only operating system since 2013. I had initially used OpenSUSE then switched to Arch Linux for a little over a year until this winter when I decided to switch to Debian as I wished to use a more free as in freedom distro. Another thing that fueled my switch to Debian was the hopes of maybe one day contributing to Debian as a DM or maybe even a DD one day. In my free time I've been reading the Debian New Maintainers Guide, but during the school year really lack the free time to dive as deeply as I would really like to. I have two years of experience with Java and Python, I've been programing in C for over a year, and have some basic experience with shell and Perl scripting. I'm not the most experienced but I'm eager to learn more, contribute to free software. I follow the free and open source software very closely through articles, blogs, podcasts, mailing lists, and my university's Linux User Group.
Reproducible builds for Debian and free software
Project details: I can help make sure packages build reproducibly by analyzing packages that currently do not build and finding fixes and work around in order to get more packages building reproducibly with success.
Synopsis: Make more packages build reproducibly
Benefits to Debian Reproducibly builds improve security and trust in free software
Deliverables: More packages build reproducibly
Project schedule: I can begin on the project as soon as possible I admit I am not the most experienced so I am willing to put in lots of time in order to make myself useful and helpful to the project.
Exams and other commitments: Nope, my classes don't overlap with the SoC period
Other summer plans: Nothing major other than SoC, ideally SoC will be the main thing I am doing this summer
Why Debian?: I care deeply about free software and want to contribute back to free software to help improve it. I choose Debian specifically because of focus on being an ethical distribution and I use it on a daily basis. I'd be interested in contributing to Debian outside of SoC.
My previous Debian contributions: I've helped some friends troubleshoot their Debian installations, but have not made any public contributions
- Are you applying for other projects in SoC? Currently no, but I more than likely will. (I'll update this if I do)
