Getting around

This is detailed in the FAQ section “Travel and Transportation”.

Places of interest

Official tourism information website: https://www.brest-metropole-tourisme.fr/en/ (unfortunately it does not seem to be properly translated)

Interactive map of some places of interest: https://www.brest-metropole-tourisme.fr/en/carte-interactive/

Close to the venue or accomodation

Within reasonable walkable distance: port de la Maison Blanche, pointe du Portzic, phare (lighthouse) de Ste-Anne, pointe du Diable, fort du Dellec.

Slightly further: fort du Mengant, fort du Minou, phare du Petit Minou.

See Hiking below for a map.

Outdoors activities

Weather and tides forecasts

Quoting (and translating) the website of the Tourism Office: “In Britanny dry weather occurs several times a day”. Be advised that weather forecasts in this area are rather unreliable and should really be taken as a probability rather than a certainty.

If you are venturing in, on or near the sea it's also important to remain aware of the tides: in this area there is a difference that can exceed 7m between high tide and low tide and this generates strong currents (up to 10 knots or 5 m·s⁻¹) in either direction.

The tourism office has a convenient (though untranslated) page with weather and tides forecast (“Pleine mer” is “High Tide”, “Coefficient” can be read as a % of highest amplitude):

For nautical activities, detailed information (including nautical charts) can be browsed at https://data.shom.fr/

Hiking

Several hiking trails (including GR 34) are close to the venue and accomodation sites. They are highlighted in purple on the following map: geoportail.gouv.fr (carte topographique IGN 1/25000).

A map combining the map above and nautical charts (not for navigation purposes as they are not kept up to date) can be browsed on the geoportail: coastal map

Nautical activities

The water quality at plage du Dellec consistently ranked as “excellent” in the past years: baignades.sante.gouv.fr. The other beach nearby (plage de Ste-Anne) only ranks as “good”.

Swimmers should be wary of the tides, possibly strong currents and relatively fresh surface water temperature (14 to 16 °C, more risks of cramps).

For renting things that float, see the FAQ entry “Where may I rent a paddle, kayak or sailboat?”.
