Sul or Sulis?

It seems to me that the alternative form Sul should be acknowledged here, for the following reasons:

1. If, as is commonly believed, the name is cognate with Old Irish súil ("eye, sight") then it seems likely that the Brittonic name was also Sul, not Sulis.

2. Certainly 19th century academic discussion of the deity uses "Sul" rather than "Sulis" : for example, the Journal of the BAS.

3. Sul is the common rendering on various non-specialist but nevertheless mainstream websites, eg the official website of the City of Bath.

If there has been scholarship that has annihilated all arguments for the Sul rendering then that scholarship should be discussed in this article, rather than pretending that the Sul rendering never existed. I remember this was discussed on this page in 2020 without any conclusion, although I also recall it being argued that no Brittonic word ended in -l, which sounds rather too absolute a claim given the scarcity of known vocabulary from the time in question.

I propose adding a section in the article on the name, either renaming the entire article and noting that many younger scholars now prefer "Sulis", explaining why. Alternatively, leave it titled "Sulis" and note that the "Sul" spelling is also common, again explaining why Sulis is preferred.
