The inital project started as part of EAGLE-MISSILEER, which was the Navy's long-range air-to-air missile platform built to defend carriers.

TFX was an Air Force project to deliver a nuclear payload against a ground target.

DoD then replaced both projects to satisfy the same requirements for both services with one aircraft. This was rejected by both services.

VFAX became the Navy's project to find their next aircraft. DoD platform is also a platform used in embedded systems
