Jurong Group Representation Constituency

Template:Short description Template:Use dmy dates Template:Infobox constituency The Jurong Group Representation Constituency was a five-member Group Representation Constituency (GRC) located in the western area of Singapore. The GRC consisted of a large section of Jurong, sections of Bukit Batok and areas near Upper Bukit Timah Road. At abolition, the five divisions of the GRC were Bukit Batok East, Jurong Central, Taman Jurong, Jurong Spring and Clementi, which were managed by Jurong–Clementi Town Council.

History

In the 2011 general elections, the new Jurong Spring division was created from Jurong Central and Hong Kah divisions, while Yuhua became an SMC. In 2015, Bukit Batok was carved as an SMC while Clementi, a division under the West Coast GRC, was absorbed to the ward to maintain its five seats.

The constituency was first contested in the 2001 general election with the People's Action Party against the Singapore Democratic Party. In 2006, the PAP retained the constituency with a walkover. In 2008, Ong Chit Chung died from heart cancer. Following his death, a by-election was not called.

The PAP was challenged in subsequent elections by the National Solidarity Party (2011), Singaporeans First (2015) and Red Dot United (2020); all three challenges failed.

The GRC was led by Lim Boon Heng until his retirement from politics in 2011. After Lim's retirement, Tharman Shanmugaratnam and Desmond Lee assumed the GRC leadership, but Lee was transferred to West Coast GRC in 2020 together with Ang Wei Neng. Ivan Lim was introduced on 24 June 2020 to stand in the general election that year but withdrew 3 days later following allegations of his past behaviour. He was replaced by Xie Yao Quan.

In July 2023, Tharman stepped down from Parliament and all his positions in the government and resigned as a member of the PAP in order to stand as a candidate in the 2023 presidential election.

The constituency was dissolved in the 2025 general election. Its area was split among Jurong East–Bukit Batok GRC, Jurong Central SMC, and West Coast–Jurong West GRC, with a portion near Bukit Timah Hill being absorbed into Holland-Bukit Timah GRC.

Template:Refbegin ^ Ong died on 14 July 2008 due to a heart failure. However, no by-election was called since it was a Group Representation Constituency (GRC), and the workload for the Bukit Batok division was given to Halimah Yacob.

^ Tharman Shanmugaratnam resigned as Member of Parliament in 2023 to contest in the 2023 presidential election. However, no by-election was called as it was a GRC. Shawn Huang took over the workload for Taman Jurong, while Hamid Razak took over Jurong Spring and eventually became the MP for the Jurong Spring–Gek Poh ward in West Coast–Jurong West GRC.Template:Refend
