January 2004: Wikipedia reaches 200,000 articles in English and 450,000 articles in all languages.
January 30: The first article is written on the Ukrainian Wikipedia.
February 25: Wikipedia reaches 500,000 articles in 50 languages.
April 20: The English Wikipedia reaches 250,000 articles.
May 12: Wikipedia wins the Annual Webby Award in the "Community" category.^[1]
June 2: Wikipedia is blocked for the first time in Mainland China.
July 7: The English Wikipedia reaches 300,000 articles.
June 23: Wikipedia wins a Golden Nica for Digital Communities of the annual Prix Ars Electronica contest. See m:Golden Nica Awards 2004.
September 9: Guillaume Blanchard, known as Aoineko (see his user pages in the Japanese and French Wikipedias) is awarded the Web Creation Award as the founder of the Japanese Wikipedia by the Japan Advertisers Association.
September 20: Wikipedia reaches 1,000,000 articles [1] in over 105 languages.
November 2: The winners of the 1st Danny's contest (Best New Article) are announced.
November 20: The article count of the English Wikipedia reaches 400,000.
November 28: The first article is created on the Yiddish Wikipedia.

January 26: Script error: No such module "user". introduces the concept of barnstar-free zones.
February 22: The first Did You Know is posted, featuring the article "Pencil sharpener" which was created by User:Raul654 on February 15, 2004.
May 14: The first picture of the day is posted.
May 30: A categorization scheme is introduced in Wikipedia.
June 11: The Wikistress gauge is created after being suggested by User:Raul654.
July 23: WikiProject "Military history" recognizes the deficiency of "NewPages" for tracking new articles and creates the first manually-operated list of new articles by topic, Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/New articles, followed by Category:Wikipedia new articles.

- The Luxembourgish Wikipedia is created.
- The Ido Wikipedia is created.
- The Kurdish Wikipedia is created.
- The Georgian Wikipedia is created.

- The Urdu Wikipedia is created.
- The Persian Wikipedia is created.
- The Galician Wikipedia is created.
February 4: The Wikipedia:Association of Members' Advocates created. It is discontinued in 2007.

- The Community Main Page (now known as Wikipedia:Community Portal) is launched.
- The user category Wikipedia:Bureaucrats is established. The first bureaucrats are Angela, Eloquence, Secretlondon, Stan Shebs and TUF-KAT.
March 2004: The Yiddish Wikipedia is founded.
May 27: The Aromanian Wikipedia is created.
June 2004 The Klingon Wikipedia is created. It is locked in August 2005.
July 31: The Nynorsk-specific Norwegian Wikipedia is launched.
August 2004:
- The Divehi Wikipedia is created.
- Wapedia, a website created to deliver Wikipedia to mobile phones and PDAs is launched.
August 12: The Belarusian Wikipedia is created.
October 4: The Anglo-Saxon Wikipedia is created.
October 7, 21:44: Wikipedia:Wikifun, then known as Wikihunt, starts with the question "Find out the three countries involved in the Battle of Bunei".
October 27: Wikipedia:Department of Fun is established.
December 2004: The Azerbaijani Wikipedia is created.

June 1: Brion Vibber Day commemorates the great works of Brion Vibber, Wikipedia's lead developer.
