In functional analysis, the concept of the spectrum of an operator is a generalisation of the concept of eigenvalues of a matrix. An eigenvalue of an operator $T$ is still a complex number such that there exists a nonzero $u$ in the domain of $T$ such that $Tu=\lambda u$.
