The biggest question I have is what is the purpose of a WAD file? Does it provide better performance over using the OS' file system?

Most operating systems perform poorly if you have a lot of small files. This was even more true when Doom got out (FAT16). Furthermore, it is easier to copy one big file than a myriad smaller ones. David.Monniaux 20:20, 6 Mar 2005 (UTC)
