original proposal for article

I suggest the following sections:

  Definition
  Actual products e.g. Ethereal: http://www.ethereal.com/
Functions in a protocol analyzer: Capturing packets
     splitting them into envelopes
following an exchange on a certain "envelope level"
     find inconsistencies
Related instruments (oscilloscope, fibre analyzers, cable sonar)
  "Sniffing"
  Security issues

I suggest you figure out how much of that stuff belongs in the packet analyzer page, and put it there, instead. Guy Harris (talk) 03:26, 1 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Merge (or delete) stubs

I propose merging (or deleting) IP load tester & Telecom network protocol analyzer (and maybe even Bus analyzer) into Protocol analyzer. These articles do not seem to meet WP:Notability guidelines to merit a separate page, but perhaps are worth preserving as part of this Protocol analyzer page/stub, if reliable sources can be found. I'm also wondering if Packet analyzer should be merged here as well, since the terms are used interchangeably (in both directions[1])Yaakovaryeh (talk) 08:20, 26 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Protocol analyzer currently looks like a WP:DISAMBIG page and maybe it should stay that way. Bus analyzer is more closely associated with Logic analyzer than Protocol analyzer. Packet analyzer is fine as it is. ~Kvng (talk) 14:29, 29 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
Is there some compelling reason to have telecom network protocol analyzer separate from packet analyzer and, if so, is there some compelling reason why a "telecom network protocol analyzer" isn't just a specific type of "packet analyzer"? Guy Harris (talk) 05:01, 13 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
