Most political regions consist either entirely of islands, or else of a portion of a large landmass with perhaps some relatively small islands off the coast of this. This is a list of regions where much but not all the land is away from the mainland. Mainland in the case of countrys is a continental landmass (except for PNG); for political subdivisions, mainland may be a main island (e.g. Great Britain in the case of Argyllshire).
