Locomotive cab details

I think going into all that detail about what is in a locomotive cab is irrelevant and detracts from this article. Maybe it should be in a seperate article on locomotive cabs. —Morven 07:12, Jan 27, 2005 (UTC)

One detail about adding a window for an internal control station on an FT-B is not irrelevant. Two sentences about what a B unit lacks is not a long description, but would make too small a new page. Rather than cluttering up B unit, this proposal would clutter up the process of finding out what a B unit is and is not. Someone unfamiliar with rail terminology would not call it clutter to immediately find out what a B unit is and is not. They do not want to go chasing links. That is problem with a paper dictionary – you have to look up three or more words to understand just the first word.Rmeier 02:18, 29 Jan 2005 (UTC)
I'm much happier with the current wording, which flows much better and seems a lot less awkward. Thank you for putting in the effort to make this work better! —Morven 08:39, Feb 4, 2005 (UTC)

My mistake. In the "List of B unit locomotive models", I should have consistently used the actual B unit model designations. I should have used piping more extensively. I've fixed that. If you want to change the link itself (left side of the piping symbol - "|"), go ahead. Please leave the link name (right side of the piping symbol - "|") as it is. Thanks. I think it's fine to link to the B unit model numbers, since they should at least be redirects. —Morven 08:39, Feb 4, 2005 (UTC)

Added an image

I happened upon a GP60B on Sunday, so I photographed it and put it here. We probably should have a photo of a carbody B unit too, but they're even less common in service now I think. Certainly with Class I railroads. —Morven 15:51, Feb 14, 2005 (UTC)

Except for the UP E-units (and anything others that railroads use for excursion service) they are all gone. Schnauf 17:06, 17 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

At least in 2004, the Carrizo Gorge Railway (a shortline in southern California) had an F7B in addition to its two F7As. The A-units were used on freight (or was it simulated freight?) at least sometimes; I'm not sure about the B. Carolina Southern (another shortline) also had an F9B in addition to one operational F7A, but this was 4 years ago. They were used on freight: http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=72868 SpaceCaptain 22:50, 16 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Were the GP60B units the last B units built?

I believe the GP60Bs, built 1991, were the last built B units. Am I right? Anyone know of any others? —Morven 19:51, Feb 17, 2005 (UTC)

Pretty sure they were it, unless you count the new Green Goat cabless engines.—Schnauf 18:51, Dec 7, 2005 (UTC)

What are "SD42Bs"?

From the pictures I've seen, "SD42Bs" are actually SD40-2Bs. Why do we even list them? SpaceCaptain 15:18, 9 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

I removed it from the list. If such a unit can be shown to exist, SD42B can go back in the list. I think SD42B might be an incorrect "spelling" of SD40-2B. If you don't say "dash" when you say the name, it sounds like SD42B. EASports 03:35, 9 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Scope of this article

"Cow-calf units are also not listed, since these were considered a single locomotive." But they were usually separated eventually, like "permanently"-coupled cab unit sets. Should calves be considered as within the scope of this article? SpaceCaptain 17:55, 11 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

And FTBs were considered part of the FT, which was a two-unit locomotive, but we list them. I think that we should go by modern standards, rather than the terminology of the transition era. SpaceCaptain 15:27, 19 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Streetcars/Trams

I don't think Streetcars/Trams belong here. They are multiple units. Biscuittin (talk) 10:23, 4 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Some Zürich's streetcars are powered but don't have a cabin - they are not simple multiple units. Just like American's B-units they are full indipendent powered vehicles except that can be used only with a tram with cabin. Coccodrillo (talk) 13:58, 8 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Rebuilds

I notice the American rebuilds have been eliminated. Unless anyone thinks they shouldn't qualify, I'll put them back. SpaceCaptain (talk) 22:44, 20 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
